The "Cut & Paste" feature is one of the most useful techniques that you can use to quickly and easily build and amend your web site. The term "Cut & Paste" is taken from the newspaper industry where you get some text or on article from one place and paste it somewhere else. With computers, it is more usually "Copy & Paste". The technique applies within the page you are working on or across any software you might have on your PC. If you have some text in a Word Document, you can select it and copy it into your Web Site. This feature is common to all PC software, nothing specifically to do with Bridgewebs, but an important feature for use when updating your Bridgewebs web site.
If you have some text that you would like to use in your web site, the first thing to do is to identify it, "Mark" it. There are a number of techniques for this depending on where and how much text.
Marking the Text - Dragging the Mouse
The most common way is to Drag the Mouse, this involves placing the cursor at the start of the text that you want to copy, holding the left button down and moving the mouse to the end of the text and letting go. This marks the text and it will change to white on a dark background, usually blue. You can try this on this page or usually anything you see on your PC.
Marking the Text - Select All Text
In some cases, you can simply "Right Click", highlight the "Select All", and "Right Click" again, which turns the whole section blue.
Cut or Copy
Next, you will need to "cut" or usually "copy" the text and leave it where it is. To do this, move your mouse so that the cursor is anywhere over the marked text, "Right Click" the mouse, move the mouse to highlight the "Copy" and "Right Click" again.
Clipboard
...... You have now copied the text to the computer's "Clipboard", you won't see anything happen, and as far as you are concerned the text could be floating about in Cyberspace. But, the computer will remember it. You can carry on working on your computer, moving from one thing to another and it will still be there in an hour or so, as long as you do not do any other "Cut" or "Copy" function.
Paste
Now you need to move to where you want to put the text. Use the mouse to position the cursor where you want the text to go "Right Click" the mouse and move the mouse to highlight the "Paste" and "Right Click" again. The text that vanished into Cyberspace will appear. And that is it, finished.
Hot Keys
Once you have "Selected" your text, you can, alternatively, use Hot Keys to "Cut & Paste". The above is all done using the mouse and you can follow what is happening. Some of you prefer to use the keyboard and it is usually quicker to use Hot Keys. Whether you use the Hot Keys or the right mouse button makes no difference other than your own personal
Data Input Boxes
The "Select All" is particularly useful with "Data Input Boxes" because it simply highlights the content of the box rather than the whole page. Try the following:
Click Tab until "Monthly Pairs Competition" is highlighted, then
On your keyboard, press - CTRL A, CTRL C, TAB, CTRL V
Hey Presto, you have copied the text.
