Rose O'Farrell RIP

Greystones has lost Rose O’Farrell, one of its most ardent and keen bridge players.  Rose has been playing in local, regional and many competitions over the whole country for a long time.  Rose and her partner Patsy Meehan from Bray represented Ireland in the Senior Teams at the European Championships in Malmo, Sweden in 2004.
Both Rose and her late husband Paddy were enthusiastic supporters of Bridge in Greystones and of the idea of a Bridge Centre before it was designed or built.  When it became a reality, Rose was a member of the first Board of Directors.
Both Rose and Paddy realised that Greystones players needed to meet and play against more experienced players from outside our area.  They presented a cup for a Greystones Open Competition which is played annually.  This attracts a large entry of very experienced bridge some of whom travel long distances to play in it.
My sympathy to all of Rose’s family – many of whom are keen bridge players.
May Rose Rest In Peace

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Player of the Year 2025 – 2026
1.     There are 8 rounds in the Player of the Year Competition for 2025 – 2026.
2.     To be eligible for the competition you must have played in at least 6 rounds.
        If you were stand-by, then you must have played in at least 5 rounds.
3.     All 8 rounds will be scored by Match Points.
4.     The points awarded for each round are:
        1st = 16, 2nd = 13, 3rd = 10, 4th = 7, 5th = 6
        6th = 5, 7th = 4, 8th = 3, 9th = 2 and 10th = 1.
5.     You must play with a different partner each night.
        This rule does not apply to a round you are playing as a stand-by.
6.     The winner is the person with the highest average points of 6 best results.

        For a stand-by (paired or unpaired), points are averaged over best 5 results.
7.     A prize will be awarded for 1st place.
8.     In the event of a tie:

  • If only one player was a stand-by (either paired or unpaired), then that person wins the tie-break
  • If both players were stand-byes, then an unpaired stand-by wins the tie-break
  • If this doesn't resolve the tie-break, then the player with the greater number of 1st places wins the tie-break
  • If this doesn't resolve the tie-break, then the player with the greater number of 2nd places wins the tie-break and so on.
