What to Announce

In August 2023, EBU issued new rules for Announcing and Alerting.
This is a cut-down version on Announcing for use at the Club.

Announcing your Partner's Opening Bid

  • 1♣ / 1♦  - If it may be fewer than 3 cards - "May be X"
  • 1♥ / 1♠  - [n/a]
  • 1NT      - range, eg. "12 to 14" and, if appropriate, "... may contain a singleton"
  • 2♣        - [alert]
  • 2♦         - [alert if conventional] / announce strength if natural, eg. "Weak"
  • 2♥ / 2♠  - announce strength if natural, eg. "Weak"
  • 2NT      - [n/a]
  • 3NT      - [alert if not strong and natural]
  • 3 / 4 suit  - [n/a]

Announcing Partner's Response to your NT Opening

After a 1NT opening (similar for 2NT):

  • 2♣        - If asking for 4 card major - "Stayman"
  • 2♦ / 2♥ / all transfers - Name the suit shown
  • Natural suit below game - "Natural, forcing" or "Natural, non-forcing"
