Rule of 20 openings 5-4 with 11 points |
These fall into 3 categories: Suits are 5-4 as shown. Ideally all 11 points should be in the 5-4 suits.
Two suits in between
CS, DC, HD, SH - You can always bid these because whatever partner replies you can bid your second suit.
One suit in between
CH, DS, HC,SD - Here you can bid your second suit if partner bids the suit in between. However if partner bids the other suit eg 1C-1H-1S you will need to repeat your opening suit. Ideally to rebid the suit at the 2 level you should have a suit quality of 8 (number of cards plus number of top honours which should include 2 of the top 3).
No suits in between
CD, DH, HS, SC - Here both of the other suits are above your second suit. So you will need to repeat your opening suit. Ideally to rebid the suit at the 2 level you should have a suit quality of 8 (number of cards plus number of top honours which should include 2 of the top 3).
Acceptable 5 card suits with suit quality of 8
AKQxx, AKJxx, AKTxx, AQJxx, AQTxx, KQJxx, KQTxx.

1NT |
1NT (weak)-2C Stayman
Yesterday I bid 2C over 1N with 7 or 8 points and two 4 card majors looking for a better fit.
My logic is:
1NT hands are 5332, 4432 or 4333.
So with 5332 there are two possibilities out of 4 that the 5 card suit is a major and similarly with 4333.
With 4432 there is only 1 combination that has no 4 card majors ie when the two 4 card suits are C and D. The others are CH, CS, DH, DS and HS.
So of the 14 hand possibilities 9 have a 4 card major.
BUT it is not certain that partner has a 4 card major. Last night partner had 5 Ds and I only had 2 Ds.
So the right thing to do when looking for a better fit with 0 points up is to have 5 of one major and 4 of the other. Then if partner bids 2D you can bid 2 of the 5 card major.
There is one other (rare) hand that can bid 2C and that has 5 Ds and 2 4 card majors. Here if partner bids 2D you pass and guarantee a 5-2 fit.
1NT (weak)-2S McKendrick (with 1N-2N showing exactly 12 points)
This is a useful convention which is either showing a transfer to a 6 card minor or 11 points.
Opener’s responses are:
2N 12 or 13 points
3C 14 points
Responder then bids:
Over 2N
Pass with 11 points
3C or 3D with a 6 card minor
Over 3C
3N with 11 points
Pass with 6 Cs
3D with 6 Ds
