At our August Sectional, EMBA paid tribute to two long time players we lost too early:

One of the unfortunate realities of being part of the ACBL community is that, over time, we lose far too many wonderful people. At the very top of any such list, would be David Marshall, former full-time ACBL Director. David leaves his wife Donna, two children, Alan and Laura, and four cherished grandchildren.

I first worked with David more than 40 years ago at one of his early tournaments as a director. It was immediately clear what a pleasure David was to work with. While he was an excellent director, he was also so much more—a funny, helpful, supportive, and empowering person. He had a way of making everyone around him feel better, and in doing so, gave them the confidence to be better at whatever they were doing—directing, playing, or simply being part of the bridge community.

David's knowledge of seemingly countless subjects was almost encyclopedic and always a delight. He and I could spend hours discussing Gilbert and Sullivan and trying to top each other with obscure bits of knowledge. I almost never won; David was a savant.

Bridge was one of David's great passions, beginning in his college years at Tufts University. That passion remained with him throughout his life and ultimately led him to achieve the rank of Life Master in 1984, an accomplishment that reflected his love of the game and his commitment to it. He and Donna enjoyed playing bridge and attending tournaments throughout the United States and abroad, with some of their most memorable bridge adventures taking them to Europe and Australia. David also enjoyed his time as a Bridge Host on many cruises throughout the world, combining his love of bridge with his enjoyment of travel and the friendships he made along the way.

In the New England bridge community, David was well known and deeply appreciated for his ever-ready quips and wonderfully dry sense of humor. It was always a pleasure when I came to play in New England and was lucky enough to find myself in the same section—or sitting opposite David and Donna. Just sharing 15 minutes with them could brighten the room and make their opponents smile, even as David and Donna walked away with a couple of tops.

The bridge world in New England has lost a great bridge personality and, much more importantly, a giant human being. David brought humor, knowledge, kindness, and warmth wherever he went, and he leaves behind many friends who were fortunate to have shared a table, a tournament, a cruise, a conversation, or a laugh with him.

David, we will all miss you terribly.

What a wonderful opportunity District 25 experienced in 2025!

The ACBL Charity Foundation provided a generous grant of $30,000 to District 25. To determine how the monies would be distributed, any active ACBL bridge member in District 25 could submit an application for an organization that they were actively involved with (not just as a donor) to request a grant. EMBA received several great applications which were reviewed by a committee of EMBA Board Members. EMBA was allotted three submissions for the grand drawing held at the Regional tournament in Warwick, Rhode Island.

The Bike Connector in Lowell, MA was one of six lucky organizations throughout District 25 to receive a $6,000 grant. The Bike Connector distributed more than 2,200 bikes to children and adults (affordable transportation) in Lowell and surrounding communities in 2025.

The ACBL Charity Foundation’s funds are primarily derived from ACBL games played at face-to-face clubs and tournaments.
