Please find attached the amended constitution and accompanying notes (Constitution 2022 and Constitution Changes 2022).

Durham Bridge Club Current COVID policy

Our COVID policy has been reviewed by the committee at the end of June 2022 and is confirmed as follows:

  • all players should be vaccinated against Covid 19 (obviously with exceptions due to any medical condition);
  • anyone with symptoms of any transmissable disease or has tested positive for any such disease, especially Covid, shall not attend the Club until they are symptom-free and/or testing negative;
  • mask-wearing is not mandatory but if one player requests mask-wearing for the duration of the boards at that table then all 4 players should comply;
  • the room will be well ventilated.

Mask wearing policy change

The Committee of Durham Bridge Club has recently considered our policy on mask-wearing at the Club. The Centre's Management have themselves now said that mask-wearing is a decision left to the clubs in question, and the current numbers in Durham show a marked fall (the current recorded number are 140 cases per 100,000 and Durham, as a Local Authority, is placed 20th out of 149 - but these numbers are likely to be underestimates given the reduced rate of testing). Nevertheless, the Committee's view is now that, with effect from May 16th:

  • all players will at all times respect everyone else and their choices;
  • we recognise that the bridge-playing community is, by virtue of its age profile, at the more vulnerable end of the demographic;
  • we will continue with full ventilation;
  • mask-wearing is no longer mandatory whilst playing bridge at DBC - players are free to wear, or not wear, a mask BUT if any player at any table requests all four players to wear masks then all players at that table will readily comply with that request for the duration of their boards. So it is essential that all players continue to bring a mask with them

Thanks and very best wishes,

Adrian (09 May 2022)

Cansino Trophy - History Explained
Cansino Trophy - History Explained

Jonathan Cansino

Club member George Cansino presented the Cansino Trophy to Durham Bridge Club in January 2018 in memory of his brother Jonathan.  Jonathan was recognised as a brilliant player ranked in the all time top three of  British players and the trophy we now have is one won by him during his illustrious career.  He studied at Oriel College, Oxford from which he graduated in 1961 and after just three years as an articled clerk in his uncle's solicitors practice, he left to play bridge professionally.  He represented Britain many times at both junior (in those days under 30) and senior level and also took part in the 1972 Olympiad in Miami partnered by Jeremy Flint.  We are honoured to have his name linked with our Club.
