If you were not using the 2C bid to show both majors, West would have to overbid with 2S and E with only 8HCP (and knowing that partner has less than 16 ) would pass. The heart fit would never be found.

North has a tricky decision as to whether 1NT doubled will gain more points going off for N/S than a possible vulnerable 3NT by N/S if it makes

Although E has only 4HCP partnerʼs bid tells E that they have a S fit and E must bid 2S. Partner must not be left in a convenional bid, it doesnʼt matter how few points you have. Also E must not bid 2D a) because that has a conventional meaning in this system – that you have equal length in the majors and b) because you havenʼt enough points

This is a tricky. S replies to Nʼs 2C with 2D to show equal length in the majors so asking N to bid their longer major which North does.
I donʼt think it likely that E (vulnerable) will bid their poor D suit over Nʼs 2C so E/W will not find their diamond contract.
I think N can make 2S with careful play

Although E has 5/4 in the majors they are both very weak suits and most of the strength of the hand is in the minors. E isnʼt quite strong enough to double but N/S are going off in 1NT (although the E/W defence isnʼt easy) whereas if E bids 2C then W is going to have to say 2H and they will be struggling

Using Landy 2C makes it easy for N/S to find the Spade game whereas if S has to bid 2H over the opening 1NT it is difficult to see what they will end up in. North canʼt bid 2S with a 4card suit and 3C doesnʼt help S who isnʼt really strong enough to reverse into 3S when they donʼt know that partner can support spades.

West must remember not to bid 2C and I donʼt think the hand is strong enough when vulnerable to bid 3C. As it stands as West is on lead E/W can take 6 club tricks (even though the suit is inevitably blocked) + a spade and at least 1 diamond. S is going to to be careful discarding on the clubs if they are to avoid further losses

I put this in to show the sort of problems one could face. East knows that E/W have enough points for game but also knows that North has both majors and enough points to call, (however it also means that S can have almost nothing). If E/W try to play in 5D they will go off if S leads a spade but with North on lead 3NT makes with overtricks

Not a good fit but I think E/W can probably struggle to 2S if they set up the hearts quickly. However, W must remember thet they canʼt bid 2D. If they forget and bid 2 diamonds E will assume that they are being asked to bid their longer suit and since both are 5 card, E will bid the lower, hearts, which W will have to pass. Now the contract is far more difficult and a god defence should take it off.

W is stuck for a bid. With 11HCP opposite a NT opener W knows they may be missing 3 NT. With only 4 card suits W canʼt bid a suit and without a heart stop canʼt bid NT. X suggests that W has 4 spades and points but no heart stop. E now has to decide what to do: 2NT, 3NT and P are all arguable. As the cards lie I think P scores the best. With S on lead 2NT or 3NT makes, since whatever S leads gives away a trick

W has a perfect Landy 2C over the NT but E has problems. Clearly there is a total misfit but they have the points for a game. 2NT tells W that East has 13+ points and both the minors. Since W has opening strength and both major suits are strong (and from the bidding you van place S with most of the missing points) I would try 3NT

S bids 2NT to show both minor suits and since N/S are vulnerable it is a strong hand but with not enough points to double. With only 6 HCP, N simply indicates the longer of the 2 minor suits in the hand knowing the this will provide a 5-3 fit at least and the QC should prove useful
