Interesting hand. How to open? Should you preempt. What level to bid to. Should you sacrifice?

East has a difficult choice whether to preempt. Increasingly players are preempting with 5 card suits. (you should agree with your partner and partner should alert it could be as short as 5. Some do it only with specific rules e.g. when NV or in positions 1 and 3 or not 5332 or with a good suit, or any combination of these rules.

If East passes.

South will bid 1♦ 

West will bid a weak jump overcall of 2♥ 

North should double to show support of other suits, though he has good ♦ support.

East will jump to 4♥ 

South with 4♠s will bid 4♠ 

West will pass as he has shown his hand.

North will pass

East may bid 5♥ - bidding to the leval of the fit (law of total tricks) as they have 11♥ s between them and the vulnerablility of NV versus V. This is the best decision as 5♥ s goes 3 off for -500 versus the 4♠ making 5 for -650.

If East opens a weak 2♥ with the 5 card suit.

South wil double.

West will bid 4♥ 

North will bid 4♠ 

East will pass

West will sacrifice with 5♥  knowing they have a minimum of 11♥ s
