Difficult duplicate first hand with all results different.
North has a choice of 1NT (12-14) balanced but 2452 shape is not ideal but avoids rebid issues. Probably best is 1♦ and accept you may have to rebid 2♦ .
Over 1♦ has to choose between a double (lousy shape with no shortage in opponents suit), 1NT (not quite 15-18HCPs but the 14HCPS, two 10s and good values sitting over opening values or pass.
- East passes, South will bid 1♥ , West has to choose an overcall of 1♠ or bid 2♦ showing 5+/5+ in the unbid suits. Over either of these North will bid 2♥ and East will jump to 3♠ which is likely to be passed out.
- East bids 1NT, South will pass and West will bid 2♥ as a transfer to ♠ s which North may double this artificial bid to show ♥ s and East will bid 2♠ s (this shows 3♠ s, a pass would show 2♠ s and 3♠ s would be a super accept showing 4♠ s). Over the 2♠ South may bid 3♥ , which West will bid 3♠ the final contract.
- East doubles and South will bid 2♥ , West will overcall 2♠ and North will bid 3♥ and East has to decide whether to bid 3♠
Bidding to the maximum is the winning decision here with both sides non vulnerable. N/S Bidding 4♥ even if doubled is one off and a good score. If E/W do not bid 3♠ they will get a poor score.
