| PAT BRAY R.I.P |
 |
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Pat Bray. Pat was a member of long standing and played at the club on Monday and Friday afternoons. Before retiring Pat was Headmistress at a local school and had two sons. Until stopping driving Pat played in the Yorkshire League teams representing the club. Pat was always impeccably behaved at the bridge table and exemplified best behaviour at bridge. She also previously helped out on the Wednesday afternoon sessions. Along with other members from the club Pat loved the away trip to the Bedford Hotel at Lytham St Annes. She also loved her twice yearly cruise or exotic holidays with her whole family. Pat was a very active person and planned to do something every day be it a trip into town or going for a walk and always ended the day with a cup of tea and a biscuit. On the afternoon of her passing she mentioned to her sons that she had come top in her final game. You will be sorely missed Pat and our sincere condolences go out to all your family and friends.
The funeral will be a private family affair.

| WADDINGTON SHIELD SUCESS KENYON WINS AGAIN |
 |
Congratulations to Geoff Kenyon's team on winning the Waddington shield, Yorkshire's principal teams of 4 knockout. In a tight match they triumphed on the last board winning by the narrow margin of 4 imps and in the process gained revenge for their defeat in last years final. Indeed the holders very nearly fell at the semi final stage to Doncaster team of David Beresford ,David Ward Ian Guy and Richard Draycott by another narrow margin of 5 imps Doncaster losing out on the very last card played.
Our Grand Master Geoff now holds both the Pairs and Waddington shields titles in Yorkshire.

| Board 26 from Doncaster A V York B - 02 November |
Show Detail |
This was Board 26 with East declaring a 4 Heart contract. South led the Club 3 and North won the Ace and Queen of Clubs continuing with the singleton 2 of Diamonds.
Declarer has to play the trump suit for the loss of only one trick (to the Ace). A small Heart is led and the Heart 10 is inserted. This works as the only card to beat the 10 is the Ace. The Queen is picked up by another small Heart lead from the East hand and all is well.
The hand record reported that only 9 tricks were available to East in a contract of 4 Hearts. Can you solve this problem and describe the defence which beats the contract?
|
| Show Answer |
After cashing the Ace and Queen of Clubs North must lead a third Club. This gives a ruff and discard but this is of no use to declarer. Declarer takes the ruff in hand and leads a Heart, finessing the 10 as planned, which loses to the Ace. North must then lead another Club and whether East ruffs in hand or aims to ruff in dummy, South must insert the Heart Queen, forcing the King from dummy. Now, North's 9 of Hearts is promoted to the setting trick.
Would you have found the winning defence? |
