Members (those signed up to receive emails from the club) were sent an email on 1 September 2024 about 2024/2025 competitions:
The new club year starts on 1 September and so it is a good time to tell you about the format of the year's competitions.
Championship Pairs and our individual competition (the Fearn Cup) are a similar format to last year, each consisting of a ladder competition (running over 5 months rather than 6) followed by final stages in March and April. This year the ladders will include Friday afternoon sessions (as well as Monday/Tuesday evenings and Wednesday afternoons), and because of that the ladders will run for 5 rather than 6 months.
Championship Teams will return to the format we used to have, i.e. multiple teams sessions rather than head-to-head matches. There will be 5 heats, 2nd Wednesday evenings in September to January, with a final on the 2nd Wednesday in February. To qualify for the final teams have to play in at least 3 heats, and there is a carry forward imp score of 20% of total imps from the 3 best heats. The 1st heat is on Wednesday 11 September.
As well as the above 3 "major" competitions, we have the Chester Bowl in October and Chester Congress in January, and also the ladies/mens/mixed pairs championships in April and May, the Bob Graham Individual Final in September, the Daniel Miller Cup in October, and the annual ladies vs men teams match (for the Glyn Ellis Trophy) in August. You can find the dates for these competitions by clicking here and the format/procedures by clicking here.
Finally, the EBU is running a Festival of Bridge (BRIDGE - IT'S A BIG DEAL!) in the 2nd week of September, aiming to raise £60,000 for Cancer Research UK. Deva's regular sessions that week will be part of the festival with table money (net of BBO's share for Tuesday evenings) going to the charity. For that week the table money will be £1 higher than usual ($1.50 for BBO).
