It was good to see Deva full again for the Chester Bowl competition on Sunday 18 October. We had 18 full tables and played 50 hands over two sessions, with time for a meal between time. The first session was a qualifier session with the top 14 pairs going into a final and others playing a consolation session. The overall winners were Roger Hopton and Gillian McMullan who were well ahead of Barry Jones and John Hampson in 2nd place. The qualifier session was won by Stewart Hart and Jane Campion with Eddie Thornton-Chan and Tony Hodgson 2nd. The consolation event was won by Kath Nelson and Rhona Goldenfield with Jerry Hopkins and Philip Waring in 2nd place. The Chester Bowl is one of Deva's charity events and this year in support of the charity Blood Bikes - with proceeds from the event itself and many generous donations from those taking part we raised over £700 - thank you to all.

Well done to Peter Gill and Ray Fryer who have won the club's Daniel Miller Cup with a truly outstanding score of 75%. The competition was held on the afternoon of 5 October and is mainly open to players who participate in the club's teaching and supervised social play programmes, Here is a photo of Peter and Ray and the Daniel Miller Cup.

Our AGM takes place on Monday in the club starting promptly at 6:30pm. Please arrive by 6:15 for a free glass of wine before hand. Afterwards we will have a free bridge session playing a reduced number of boards if necessary so as to finish at about 10pm. There will be a host and so anyone wanting to stay can have a game.

We held a duplicate bridge drive on Thursday 24 September with proceeds going to the Village Phone Box restoration project. We had 12 full tables (which made for a good competition) and took a break at half time to enjoy a sandwich and cake lunch (delicious!). Here are photos of first N/S (just North) and first E/W and the mystery prize winners (the pair nearest 50%) all being congratulated by Susan, the organiser of the day and soon to be new president. Together with proceeds from entry fees and a raffle less expenses we raised just over £780 to go to refurbishing the phone box into a book and seed exchange. We are thrilled that the money will be used to benefit the village in this way.

We held the Bob Graham Individual tournament last night (Thursday 17 September) with 20 players competing against each other, trying to bring out the best in their partners and confuse their opponents. Everyone partnered everyone else for one board - 19 boards in total. We saw a squeeze play, a brilliant deceptive lead and no doubt more technical plays befitting of text books. Congratulations to the winner, Steve Walker, and to the runner up, Ian Blackhurst, and third place, Mark Ehrlich. Here is a photo of the three with Steve holding the trophy.

The new programme of lessons for 2026/27 starts at the beginning of October and includes daytime and evening lessons for both beginners and improvers. You can find more details under "Lessons and Practice Sessions" in the menu.

Last Sunday's Glyn Ellis Ladies vs Men teams match was a charity event. We raised £496 for Chester Aid to the Homeless (CATH). Many thanks to those who supported it and contributed to the event being a success.

Our annual teams match, Ladies vs Men, took place on Sunday 9 August. There were 5 ladies and 5 men teams. The ladies fell behind in the 1st round but had 2 tremendous scores in rounds 2 and 3 and then hung on to the lead for the 4th and 5th rounds. Well done to the ladies for regaining the trophy lost to the men in the previous 2 years.

As in previous years there was a handicap to the ladies of 1 Imp per board per table allowing for the men having a higher NGS. The scores on this basis can be seen below:

There were prizes to the highest placed team (on basis of handicaps) and this was a ladies team, and prizes to the highest men and ladies pairs in the X-IMPS table (without handicap). As well as a good game of bridge we were treated to a wonderful afternoon tea - with bridge and tea there was something for everyone! It was one of our charity events and we raised £496 for CATH (Cheshire Aid to the Homeless).

We are very grateful to Adriana Hayden (Mike Haydens’s widow) for donating Mike’s bridge library and glass fronted shelves for members of Deva bridge club to use.  The shelves are in the middle of the South wall of the club.  Please have a look and take away that interest you.  If you have books to donate please just add them to the shelves.
