  Honorary Member

The committee has decided to make Kate Beckett an Honorary member to mark her long years of service and loyalty to the club.  While she hasn't lately been able to come to the club as much as she used to, she was in the club yesterday (Wednesday) and the President said a few words of thanks and presented her with a certificate. Kate served on the committee for many years and helped with a multitude of tasks, often behind the scenes. John Dawe was very appreciative of her support when he was PTD and she organised Saturday duplicate bridge evenings (yes we did have them in the past!). She was always prepared to volunteer in ways others weren't, she helped organise the helper rota for (and helped at) lessons and wasn't afraid to get her hands dirty getting involved in the garden and sorting out our bins, and in more ways than we can mention. Thank you Kate! Here is a photo of her in the club yesterday. Her photograph will join those of our other two Honorary Members, John Dawe and Fred Dixon.

  System Cards

Did you know you can download a blank System Card from the EBU website? Here is a link which will will take you to a page from which you can choose a word document version that you can edit at home or a pdf version you can print and write on. Look for the "Blank EBU 20B Card (Word or PDF)" links.

We should all have a completed system card when playing in the club duplicate pairs sessions and make it available to opponents. We would encourage using the EBU 20B layout as it is widely used and familiar to many of us. However, if playing a simplified system then a simplified card as on the cover and back of Deva scorecards is perfectly adequate.

Filling in a full or simplified system card with your partner should help define/clarify your system and avoid misunderstandings - and provide a basis from where you can extend your system going forwards. In other words, they should be a benefit to you as well as to opponents. We will place a few blank system cards by the score cards in the club - help yourself if you want to - and feel free to ask for help in completing the card if you need it.

  President's Day

We had 12 tables for this year's President's Day on Sunday. Proceedings started with a game of bridge after which there was a talk from Robert Whittall (CEO of the Chester Aid to the Homeless - CATH) about the charity, and a 2 course meal. Winners N/S and E/W were Sheena Parker & Joan Webb and Stewart Hart & Jane Campion. Janet Falcon & Joan Lythgoe and Dave Stretch & Steve Ingleby were runners up N/S and E/W. Here are photos of the winners and runners up together with Philip Waring (TD) and Sheena who organised the afternoon.

We don't yet know how much was raised for CATH in total (we will include it here when we can) but the raffle on its own raised £272.

  Tyler Hill match report

During lockdown we played a series of online matches against other clubs, pitting a range of pairs against similar strength pairs - a much needed bridge fix to relieve the tedium!

One of those (very welcome) opponents was Tyler Hill BC from Canterbury in Kent and recently they contacted us to arrange a re-match. We managed to put together seven matches of which Deva won four and, overall we came out on top by 78 VPs to 62. Well done everybody and particular thank to those from both clubs who helped to organise the match. Here are the full results:

  Our Chester Congress

There are running marathons and there are bridge marathons! Deva Bridge Club ran a two day bridge marathon on January 24 & 25 with two sessions each day - we call it the Chester Congress. Players came from far and wide such as from clubs in Manchester, Liverpool, North Wales and Shropshire, as well as our own club. The Congress was ably Directed by James Vickers and assisted by Simon Anderson. Catering by Sophie was provided on both days with delicious meals and even more delicious desserts.

Saturday's Swiss Pairs competition was won by Bob Loveridge and Nicholas Sutcliffe and Tracy Sherman and Boris Ewart were runners up. They can be seen in the 1st photo below - the winners are holding the Capel Cups. Third place was Tom Slater & Daniel Kelsall and the Ascenders prize was won by Sebastian Jones and Keith Shuttleworth. Sunday's Swiss Teams competition was won by John Hassett, Alan Mould, John Holland, Jackie Pye (2nd photo - holding the Latham Knox Trophy) with Rhona Goldenfield, Kath Nelson, Jeff Smith and David Barton coming 2nd (3rd photo). Congratulations to all of you.
