Useful Bidding Information

Courteous behaviour is an exceptionally important part of the game of bridge. Do not make any comments, particularly during play or afterwards, about how an opponent has bid the contract or played the cards. If any comments are made about play which you find unacceptable, you should call the Director and report this to a Committee member as soon as possible - preferably on the day that this occured.

Always count your cards - face down - do not look at them until you have ensured you have 13.

Do not touch the bidding box until you are ready to withdraw a bidding card and make a call. Do not fiddle with the bidding cards. Your opponents may think you are giving unauthorised information to your partner.

Use the stop card if making a jump bid. Place the stop card on the table, make your bid and then wait 10 seconds before putting it back in the bidding box.

Make announcements or alert if appropriate - e.g. range of partners opening NT, Stayman, transfers.

Use the alert card if appropriate - usually for artificial calls.

Leave your bidding cards on the table until the end of the auction and the opening lead is played.

During play, as declarer, give explicit instructions to dummy on which card to play - suit and rank.

As dummy, during play of the contract, you must not touch or play any of dummy's cards until told to do so by declarer. Avoid giving any impression that you are trying to indicate to declarer the card to be played from dummy.

As dummy, you may try to prevent an irregularity - i.e. point out to declarer if they try to lead from the wrong hand, or ask if they are void in a suit if they ruff or discard. Otherwise, you should remain silent.

If you are North, ensure that the boards are played in the correct order and orientation. Boards should remain on the table, preferably in the centre, in the correct orientation, during the auction and the subsequent play of the contract.

If you are North, please remember to pass the boards to the next table in the correct order and orientation.

To avoid confusion and potential argument, at the end of play leave your tricks on the table until both sides have agreed the number of tricks made.

Shuffle your cards at the end of play before returning them to the board. Ensure they are placed in the correct slot.
