A Brief History |
The Club was founded in 1982 by Betty Hargreaves and Clarice Waddington; two very determined individuals living in Birchwood at that time. They had a lifelong interest in the game and decided to remedy the lack of opportunities to play bridge in the area, by starting their own club. The Club was known as the Birchwood Bridge Club and its members played at "Parkers Farm" Risley.
Very soon the venue became too small for the growing membership, so the Club moved to the Croft Memorial Hall, where now it meets for regular playing sessions starting at 7pm on Monday evenings. The move to Croft, and an increase in membership from that area, prompted the Club to change its name in the mid-1980s to the Birchwood & Croft Bridge Club.
The Club celebrated its 21st birthday in 2003, and for the very first time elected a man, Kevin Brennan, as its President following five ladies who had previously held the office.
