Welcome to Colchester Duplicate Bridge Club
Colchester Virtual Bridge Club

It is with much regret that the Committee of the Colchester Duplicate Bridge Club has decided to suspend its online Tuesday tournaments for the forseeable future.

The decision has been taken because the low numbers participating in recent weeks means that running the tournaments online is no longer viable.

David Haig-Thomas

We are very sad to report that David Haig-Thomas has died at home on 26th June 2022.  David was a member of Colchester Bridge Club for many years where his regular partners included Julie Menzies and his brother Tony.  David was an excellent card player and an innovative bidder.  David represented the club in Germany in March 1987. Colchester's twin town Wetzlar organised the weekend bridge competition, inviting teams from Avignon and Tarragona with whom they were also twinned.  But perhaps David will be best remembered for his great sense of humour and the many stories he told between boards, many of which could/should not be repeated in polite company!

The family are having a service for him at St. Michael's church in Kirby-le-Soken at 3pm on Thursday 21st July. Every one is welcome.

Donation for Ukrainian Refugees

In common several other bridge clubs locally and nationally, the Committee has agreed that the Colchester Duplicate Bridge Club should make a donation of £250 in support of the Ukrainian refugees, mostly women and children, who have fled their war torn country

Suffolk Golf & Bridge Day 17th October 2022
Suffolk Golf & Bridge Day 17th October 2022

A golf-bridge day organised by the Suffolk Contract Bridge Association will be staged at Aldeburgh golf course on Monday 17 October 2022. Aldeburgh is the oustanding golf course in Suffolk and is ranked in the top 100 in the country.

The day will comprise 18 holes of foursomes, a two course lunch, 18 boards of bridge and tea. Prizes will be awarded to the overall winners of the golf and bridge.

Aldeburgh is able to accomodate up to 48 players. The cost will be £80 per player (£25 for Aldeburgh GC members). To enter click GOLF BRIDGE DAY

Director Please
If you need to call the Director about a possible infringement of the laws of bridge you should a) politely inform your opponents that you are going to call the director and b) raise your hand and say "Director, please".  When the Director comes to the table the person who called him/her should state the facts of the matter concisely and politely.  There is a distinct difference between invoking the Laws of Duplicate Bridge and acting in an overbearing manner. The former is playing the game in a firm but fair manner - the latter contributes to some, often less experienced, players being put off playing at our Club.

Hesitating or asking questions is not illegal, but players should be aware that both of them compromise partner's next action. It is strongly recommended that, if you plan to Pass whatever the opponent's bid means, you delay asking questions about their bids until the auction is completed.  To see the full text of The Laws of Duplicate Bridge, click on Useful Links>EBU>EBU Information: Documents>Laws & Ethics Publications>2007 Laws of Duplicate Bridge.
Results to EBU

Results are normally submitted to the EBU on the Friday after each Tuesday's game. Any queries relating to the results should be made to the scorer prior to that time.

Scoring and Results

Scoring is with Bridgemates and we have duplimated boards so hand records are on the website after each game. If you explore this website you will find details of this club and information regarding forthcoming club and local events.

We are affiliated to the English Bridge Union and are members of the Suffolk Contract Bridge Association.  The Club supports the EBU's Best Behaviour at Bridge (BB@B) policy - click on the tab on the left for more details.
