Guest Lecturers at the Academy

Throughout the season, we aim to welcome a range of Guest Lecturers to the Club — some to entertain, others to enhance your bridge with fresh perspectives on bidding and play.
Expect sessions on advanced bidding techniques and new ways of thinking at the table, designed to stretch and inspire players of all levels.

We’re currently working on dates for the autumn, and will share full details as soon as plans are confirmed.

Among our exciting guests will be:

  • Barnet Shenkin – World Champion and renowned bridge personality

  • Julia Palmer – International player and highly respected teacher

Stay tuned! We’ll keep you well informed of upcoming events, dates, and topics.

Guest Lecture with Julia Palmer Postponed to 2026

Join us for an inspiring and enjoyable day of bridge learning with Julia Palmer, International Player from NMBC Edinburgh, as she returns to Glasgow to debut at Clyde Bridge Centre to deliver another of her highly praised One-Day Guest Lectures.

Julia’s engaging style and practical approach make complex topics clear, helping players of all levels build confidence and insight at the table.

🕒 When

Postponed to 2026
Registration & Coffee: 9.30 – 10.00 am
Finish: approximately 4.30 pm

1️⃣ Strong Raises of Partner’s Major

  • When to raise partner’s Major to game — or higher
  • Splinters, Jacoby 2NT, and the 3NT “pudding raise”
Each of these “picture bids” tells partner more about your hand, helping opener re-evaluate strength and shape.

2️⃣ Competing After Opponents Open a Weak 2

  • Identifying hands suitable for overcalls or take-out doubles
  • Advancer’s options and decision-making after a take-out double

Expect a lively day of slides, notes, and prepared hands to bid and play, ensuring you can put new ideas straight into practice.

👥 Who Should Attend

Ideal for:

  • Bronze-ranked players eager to sharpen their auctions
  • Graduates of SBU lessons now playing regular club tournaments and ready for the next step

You’ll benefit most by attending with your regular partner — but solo players are also very welcome.
