Help Shape the Future of Youth Bridge in Scotland
Help Shape the Future of Youth Bridge in Scotland

Over the past year, the Scottish Bridge Union (SBU) has made exciting strides in developing Youth Bridge across the country. As their initiatives grow, so does the need for a committed and collaborative team to help them deliver even more impact. They’re now recruiting volunteers to take on key roles within the Youth Bridge programme. If you're organised, enthusiastic, and eager to make a difference in young people's lives through bridge, please contact OpsCoordinator@sbu.org.uk

Normally The Clyde Bridge is easily accessible from the North and South of Glasgow, Paisley, Dumbarton, Erskine, Kilmarnock, Greenock, Hamilton, East Kilbride & Cumbernauld. However extra time may be required due to major roadworks which have started on the M8. See HERE for more information. As of the 10th December one lane of the slip road towards the City Centre is open.
Our Bridge Academy has a range of courses to meet all levels of players from beginners to experienced. See Where & When We Play for list of tournaments.  But first see our Picture Gallery and then visit us and see for yourself
Visitors: All visitors are welcome up to a maximum of six visits per year.

Play & Learn Inter Generational
Play & Learn Inter Generational

Play and Learn keeps coming up with surprises!  This week it was a delight to see a grandad and granddaughter playing together. Ailsa (18), who regularly plays in our Club tournaments, teamed up with her grandfather David, who is currently on our newly started Beginners Course.
They were joined by fellow beginners Pia and Alison, giving everyone a great opportunity to practise in a relaxed and supportive setting.

No Fears
No Fears

Well done to the No Fears for once again having festive fun with sparkles and fabulous head gear! This week it was Caroline Clarke and Brigid Molloy who stole the show! Sorry folk but No Fear’s on holiday until 8th January.

"How wonderful! ' "We really enjoyed it". "Couldn't fault anything" "Food great" - These were just some of the plaudits about our party. Thank you to the myriad of helpers who helped to make the evening such a success and a special thanks to Ileen and Alyson for organising the event. Our barmen, Roy & Peter,  were a bit disappointed they didn't get any tips - but Que Sera! Donna, William, Gloria and Liz worked their socks off so remember to say thanks when you see them. Thank you to Brigid Molloy for our Ballon Arch and to Richard Molloy for hand crafting the magnificent wooden salad bowl which was won by Steve Male. A talented couple!

Barnet's Corner

 Brilliancy  Missed

The winners of the Clyde Bridge Centre League 1 were Scotch Lovers - David Shenkin, Derek and Martin Diamond, Barnet and Maggie Shenkin, Brian Spears, and Derek Peden. The league was decided on the last match when Scotch Lovers defeated GUU. The most interesting board featured a possible brilliancy which was missed by declarer.

West North East South
    3H 3S
4C 4S 5C 5S
P P P

West led the HQ  overtaken by the K and ruffed by South. Now a spade was led to the K and West pitched a diamond.

Can you find a brilliant play to make your 5S contract ?.

If you draw trumps you have only 10 winners it seems, 7 spade winners and 3 Diamonds. Counting the East hand - he has 7 hearts for the vulnerable preempt  3 spades 2 clubs so he must have only 1 diamond. If you try and play even two rounds of diamonds East will ruff and play a club. To have any chance you must draw the 3 rounds of trumps and lets say you come off dummy with a heart ruff. West has to make 3 discards and it starts to get interesting.

If West comes down to these cards. You can now cash your 3 diamonds and pitch a club . Now when you play your D8 to west’s J you pitch a club from dummy. West is endplayed and has to play  clubs allowing you to make your CK for the extra  trick. You still have a trump to ruff your last club in dummy. Wait a minute was the cry - Why does West not keep 5 diamonds and only 3 clubs then he can get out with the 5th diamond. The ruff and discard does no use, as you need to ruff  2 clubs in dummy and have no trumps left in dummy. The brilliant declarer then says - when you play the fifth diamond I will discard the last club from dummy and a club from my hand.

West is on play and declarer needs 3 tricks.  He has to play the CA or CQ giving declarer the contract. This is a beautiful bridge hand, and anyone getting the full right answer has a bright future ahead in bridge.
Wishing everyone happy holidays and a Great and Healthy New Year.
