Let’s look above at a possible bidding sequence.
1 2D West has a good hand and a 2 D reverse would be my choice
2 2H This is forcing
3 3C West shows a six card suit
4 4C East is happy to support with great minor cards for partner’s suits.
5 4D Cue bid
6 4NT RKC
7 5 S 2 + Q - do not show void in partners suit.

The Play:
We can see on this layout there are 12 tricks on top by drawing trumps and conceding a diamond . South has 4 clubs . If the CJ was with the 4 careful play would be needed . Lets say a spade was led -insert the 10, then ruff a heart.
The correct way to start the trumps would be CA and then over to the K. I f they broke 3-2 return to hand and draw trumps . If South held 4clubs to the J Declarer would need to take 3 ruffs in his hand . With most distributions he could after winning CK, pitch a diamond on HA, then ruff a second heart. We can see the HK falls here so SK and then to Dummy’s Ace. Now the HQ can be cashed for a second diamond discard . A third heart can be ruffed and that gives 6 clubs 3 spades and 2 hearts and 1 diamond. No need for the diamond finesse. If the HK does not fall the DQ would be led from Dummy . All that would be required is either for the guarded K to be in the South hand or North holding Kx or Kxx in diamonds. Declarer could then guarantee making 2 diamond tricks and score the C10 in the end game ,making 6 clubs ,2 diamonds ,3 spades, and one heart. This is why bidding 6C is better than bidding 6NT- extra chances to make it. |

| Barnet's 2nd Seminar - Another Resounding Success! |
Word had spread and over 50 people attended this second seminar presented by Barnet Shenkin.
Once again Barnet regaled us with hilarious stories about the great characters of Bridge, whilst using some of the hands they had played in memorable championships, to show us how these icons found the awe inspiring leads and how they worked out how to get there. However we didn't need to despair because even these mythological creatures made costly mistakes leading to disaster! We were joined on this occasion by a number of our young players who hopefully were inspired by Barnet's accounts of tournaments he entered as a 14 year old. Not sure if they would even have known of some of the names of these founders of the modern game of Bridge, most of whom had died before our Junior members were born. But hopefully they will go away and look up "Culbertson" "Hammen" "Lightner" amongst others. The feedback has been excellent and we all went away with a "Bible" of tips to help us with our leads - providing our partners remember the same tips we do!
