Normally The Clyde Bridge is easily accessible from the North and South of Glasgow, Paisley, Dumbarton, Erskine, Kilmarnock, Greenock, Hamilton, East Kilbride & Cumbernauld. However extra time may be required due to major roadworks which have started on the M8. See HERE for more information. As of the 10th December one lane of the slip road towards the City Centre is open.
Our Bridge Academy has a range of courses to meet all levels of players from beginners to experienced. See Where & When We Play for list of tournaments.  But first see our Picture Gallery and then visit us and see for yourself

Could you teach Bridge?

You don’t have to be an expert to teach Beginners to play Bridge! Possibly a back ground in teaching is more helpful! After all you didn’t need a degree in Astronomy to teach about the Solar System!

Play & Learn Inter Generational
Play & Learn Inter Generational

Play and Learn keeps coming up with surprises!  This week it was a delight to see a grandad and granddaughter playing together. Ailsa (18), who regularly plays in our Club tournaments, teamed up with her grandfather David, who is currently on our newly started Beginners Course.
They were joined by fellow beginners Pia and Alison, giving everyone a great opportunity to practise in a relaxed and supportive setting.

Judgement

Monday 5th January

Judgement in the bidding is one of the most difficult aspects in bridge. Even the very best players often have difficulty there and if they have problems, the average player will more often than not take the winning option out of those presented by a difficult opponent.

Lets look at the South problem from Monday night game

West North East South
      1
3♣ (1) p p ?
4♣  (2) p p ?

Let’s imagine you have opened the South hand 1H and West has bid 3C in the first case or 4C in the second case. What would you bid?

Let’s look at the second case. 4C is passed round to you. I am sure your first intention is to X. That would be fine if partner passes. However x is not penalty - it is primarily take out, although with a balanced hand partner will likely pass. You know partner has 0-2 clubs ,and is most likely to bid. He has not X’d 4C which is takeout so is limited in values . He was also unable to stretch to 4H. If he had 6 Spades, he might have tried 4S . He has 5+ diamonds amongst his cards. If you X and he bids 4D you are stuck.. You would have to call 4H  and how will you take care of all these losers ?
It may surprise you ,but the experienced expert player will let 4C be the last bid ,and pass it out.

4C will drift 3 down vulnerable.

If west had bid 3C  the problem is similar although it is now more tempting to take a bid. I would choose to pass again, but if I was forced to make a call ,it would be 3NT ,which would slide 1 or 2 down. It is interesting to note ,that no NS or EW recorded a plus score by playing the hand. All the plus scores were on defence.

Tip: Do not feel you have to take a bid just because you have a strong hand. If your have a strong holding in the opponents suit , it is often likely the best option is to defend. When X is penalty that is fine but if not “Discretion is the better part of Valour”

STANDBY SYSTEM

The Standby System : Members will receive their allocated dates in alphabetical order by email.  All members are required to be a Standby only once in the year and prompt confirmation, or if you cannot manage that date, a speedy response indicating when you are available, is greatly appreciated. Members can check names of the Standby in the Calendar. Also click January or February to see these rotas.  Please ensure you put your date in your own diary. If you need to change your date please try to arrange a "swap" and inform the TD of the new arrangement.
When the standby arrives they should sit at the "standby" table and anyone without a partner should add their name to the Diary on the table as they come in. The TD will pair anyone up before the start of the tournament.
