The death of Pam Normington is announced

Pamela Normington, a former chairman of the club, passed away on Thursday, 19th November. She died unexpectedly at Kingston Hospital after a short illness.

Her funeral will take place at Randalls Park Crematorium on 17th December at 1230. I have sent an email to all club members containing further details, if you would like to attend.

Gavin

Let's have a quick discussion about Coronavirus tonight

One club in the area has closed temporarily due to the coronavirus outbreak. We have not heard that any bridge-player in the area has caught coronavirus.  My personal view is that:

  1. We should carry on providing a duplicate bridge session each Monday evening for as long as members want it, and so long as we have the committee, director and scorer personnel to provide it.
  2. If and when the government goes ahead with its intention to ask all 70+ year-olds to self-isolate, that will very likely be the moment to suspend the club's activities. Given the club's age profile, we would likely be down to just two to three tables, which would not be economic.
  3. But if before that moment, we hear that anyone has played duplicate bridge in the area while incubating coronavirus, all the clubs where that person has recently played will likely close anyway in a chain reaction.
  4. As ever, players with coughs and colds should keep away from the club, as much to avoid worrying other players as anything else.
  5. For as long as the club remains open to its members, it will also welcome (healthy) visitors.

So can we have a brief discussion about this tonight before the bridge starts?  If anyone not coming wishes to email me today, please do so: gavin@claygate.club

1730 UPDATE: In view of developments such as the EBU's latest advice, I now believe it possible that members may want us to suspend the club's activities immediately. So the committee might decide tonight to call an immediate SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING there and then, which I believe we are entitled to do under clause 9(g) of the constitution, to take a vote on this decision among all those present.

Many thanks

Gavin

No avoiding the AGM scheduled for 7.10pm on Monday 9th March

This year's AGM is scheduled for 7.10pm on Monday 9th March.

Please come along. The AGM is only as exciting as you make it.  If you would like to add an item to the Agenda, please send an email to kay@claygate.club.  If you would like to stand for a committee position, please let Kay know.

There is nothing too dramatic to report.  A provisional draft of the 2019 accounts has been loaded onto the website — click on this link: https://www.bridgewebs.com/cgi-bin/bwom/bw.cgi?club=claygate&pid=display_page73 . If you have any questions about the accounts, please email pauline@claygate.club before the AGM to avoid unnecessary delays on the night.  There are no plans to increase subscriptions or table money. All the existing committee members are happy to stand for re-election.  Our biggest pervasive problem comes from having just two regular directors and just two regular scorers.

To encourage attendance, the Treasury team have decreed that the evening's bridge session will be free.

Statement from the President on Online Cheating

Here is an excerpt from a letter of 28th July 2020 from the President of the European Bridge League on the subject 'Revelation of cheating at online bridge events', available on the EBU website:

'The EBL has taken note of confessions made on social media by several players of having cheated repeatedly during privately organised online bridge events. Even though the events involved were not held under the auspices of the EBL, we want to make it absolutely clear that:

  • the EBL strongly condemns cheating in all forms of bridge, irrespective of where it occurs;
  • the EBL will support, and cooperate with, all serious efforts to combat cheating; to this end we need information to be shared among the event organisers;
  • the EBL will consider action against cheats even if the offences occurred outside its immediate jurisdiction;
  • the EBL strongly encourages cheats to confess - lacking a confession any sanctions will be much more severe.'
Death of Sandra Simpson reported

We have been shocked to hear that Sandra Simpson, long-term member of this and several other local clubs, died on Saturday night. If her family wishes it, we will provide funeral details here when they emerge.

EBU email to Clubs: 'New Government Rules about Social Distancing'

Extract from an email sent by Sam Kelly, Communications Officer at the EBU on 10th September:

'The government has just announced that starting on Monday 14th September, social gatherings of more than six people will be illegal in England. Although there will be some exceptions to this, none seem to cover the situation of any bridge clubs.  This removes any doubt there may have been in our earlier advice to clubs about whether clubs can run any face-to-face games, and makes clear that this will not be possible until such time as further changes or clarifications to the rules may be announced.'

Committee Meeting Postponed etc

The quarterly committee meeting which was due to be held on 17th June has been postponed until a yet-to-be-determined future date.  Too much remains unclear about the resumption of face-to-face bridge to make such a meeting worthwhile.

We hope you are all well.

A sign of these straitened times for bridge: the June edition of 'English Bridge' magazine is now available on the EBU website and will not be available in hard copy.  So do not expect it to be dropping through your letterboxes.  I have only glanced through it so far, but my eye was caught by a correspondence with Gordon Rainsford about cheating in online bridge!

Very best wishes

Gavin

New Guidance from the EBU on not playing club bridge

Excerpt from an EBU email to club officials sent 26th June:

'The government announced on 23rd June that it will be relaxing the social distancing requirements with effect from 4th July. This has led some clubs and other bridge organisers to wonder if they will be able to start re-opening at that time.

'The government advice does say that social clubs and community centres will be able to re-open, although it says that casinos will not. However, there are a number of requirements in order to be allowed to re-open: apart from keeping a record of everyone who attends, people are still required to stay 2m apart if possible and otherwise to keep at least 1m apart along with having further mitigations like wearing face masks or having perspex barriers between people.

'Although many clubs might have the space to keep tables 2m apart, the standard bridge-table size seats players no further than 60cm from their opponents. We have been unable to uncover clear and authoritative advice that having, for instance, a perspex screen across the table, is sufficient to mitigate this. Because of this, we are unable currently to advise that even with mitigating actions, bridge clubs can generally re-open to run face-to-face games that comply with the regulations.'

Thus the EBU makes it clear that Claygate Bridge Club should not re-open for the time being.  However, watch this space.

Gavin

From club member Joan Tait:

'John Drewett died last week. He had been in the Home of Compassion for the last year.  The cause of death was pulmonary fibrosis rather than his dementia. John was quite calm and peaceful, quite comfortable in his own mortality. While not really comprehending the pandemic, he remained in good spirits with his humour intact.'
