Master Points
This is a scheme run by the SBU to give players an indication of where they rank. Ranks are used by the Carlton and the SBU to work out handicaps in competitions.
You can earn master points in our club tournaments and in District and National events. They are usually awarded to the top quarter of the field. The higher the level of competition and the more participants the more points are awarded. There are two types of points: “black” points and "red" points. Red points are awarded for National Competitions. For ordinary Club competitions "local" points are awarded. These are worth 0.01 "black" points.
When you start off you are ranked as a Novice. As you earn points you progress as follows:

If you win a club tournament, you usually get about 40 points – so to progress to Club Master you need to do well in at least five club tournaments. You will see that to get to higher levels you have to compete in national Competitions.
Club Tournaments Master point awards are uploaded directly to the SBU masterpoints database. League matches & MacLaren Cup points are sent to the SBU by the East District Secretary. Certain competitions, the Club Cup, various Congresses still issue paper certificates. These should be submitted to the SBU at:
SBU Dept #16; 196 Rose St; Edinburgh; EH2 4A
The SBU runs annual tournaments aimed at different ranks of players (players ranked higher than those shown are not allowed to play). (NB Many of these competitions are held in Edinburgh.)
