GDPR - A funny thing happened on the way to the forum

Data Protection [GDPR = General Data Protection Regulation] can be a tricky subject.

Consider an event such as the Carlton's Russel Cup. This is a tough pairs comptition attacting players of a very high standard and runs throughout the summer. It is not limited to Carlton members and in fact anyone who can attend is welcome. Supposing it were decided to offer some form of 'Find a Partner' service to help match up would be players, particularly those in distant locations. Could you ask would be participants to put their name and contact details on a Partner Wanted list? Well no, or at least not on an open forum such as unresticted access pages of a web site. The basic GDPR objection is that private information is being displayed for anyone to see.

Now there are features of for example Bridgewebs or Pianola web sites that allow members only access and have Find a Partner facilities should your club or organisation choose to use them. This does not work for open competitions not restricted to one club. Many open competitions, for example the Gold Cup solve the problems by using a convenor. Now a team captain is contactable usuaually in the first instance via an email address. When teams are matched against each other the convenor gives the email details of the opposing team. My interpretation of GDPR is that captains agree to resticted use of their contact details for that competition only. Convenors need to make sure of their own compliance to these restictions. Once opposing captains are in contact whatever information they exchange is their owm business and I assume therefore outside the regulation [but not outside the law of the land]. So open competitions using a convenor can easily be made GDPR compliant.

This does not help for competitions such as the Russell Cup where we do not have a fixed number of entrants and they do not need to be registered in order to play.

Back in ancient times [before the current crop of athletes training for the next Olympics were born] those who considered such problems came up with the concept of a Closed User Group [CUG]

NB – Not all of these tournaments run throughout the year – please check with the club before coming along for the first time.

The tournament are more relaxed than normal club tournaments.  They are often referred to as “No Fears”.  Typically about twenty boards will be played.  They are supervised by an experienced person who will be happy to help and advise on all aspects of playing in a tournament.   You do not need a partner as the supervisor is happy to play if there is an odd number.  Those tournaments with a named supervisor are run by that person not the Carlton Bridge Club.  Further details are shown below:
