In Memoriam

Filip Kurbalija  – It is with great sadness that we have learned of the death of Filip Kurbalija following a brief illness. Filip had an outstanding record representing Wales over four decades both in Home Internationals  and European Championships. He was a tower in Welsh bridge and had won every Welsh national tournament many times over, as well as having success in major English events. Filip was a hugely respected member of the bridge world and will be missed by his many friends. Our heartfelt condolences go to his wife and bridge partner, Diane.

Please click Filip Kurbalija obit.pdf to read an obituary by Patrick Shields, a friend and bridge partner of Filip.

Tom Townsend, bridge correspondent of The Daily Telegraph, gives an account of a hand played by Filip in his column of 7th January. It gives a good indication of Filip's standing in the world of top-level bridge and can be viewed via the EWBA website. Click HERE

A memorial online bridge event is being organised by Patrick Shields through the Gloucestershire County Bridge Association to take place in a few weeks’ time. More details to follow.

Diane would like to thank you for all the warm tributes made to Filip and for the many messages of sympathy.
