We are sad to announce that David Kendrick, a distinguished bridge player and long-standing member of the club died yesterday. The EBU's announcement may be found here david-kendrick. What follows is a more personal tribute from Jonathan Cooke.
David played bridge at a very high level for 50 years. He won many of the English major competitions, including the Tollemache as part of the Cambridge team on two occasions. He played for England at Senior, Open and Junior level and he won the prestigious Swedish Chairman’s cup in 2014.
He was a very successful businessman, running a tool hire business, and, after selling that he managed a commercial property portfolio. Many of his commercial tenants benefitted from his excellent business advice over the years.
He had this habit of speaking in wonderfully repeatable one liners.
Dummy would be put down invariably with the comment “Bottom of the range”, meaning he knew he really ought to have passed.
When asked his system he’d frequently reply “What your granny plays”. Sadly now he’s gone, he may learn that my granny didn’t approve of the multicoloured two-diamond opener.
Goodbye, David, may you rest in peace
The club offers condolences to his family and friends.
