Clocked or Unclocked? What’s the difference? Which do you prefer? |
You can express your opinion here.
In an clocked tournament the NS pairs remain at the same table throughout and EW pairs move round as in a standard Mitchell movement. Aggregate tournaments must be run as clocked for this reason. In a clocked tournament when the clock reaches zero, all players are moved automatically at the same time to the next round (by BBO, not the TD) even if in the middle of a hand so there are no long waiting times. Unfinished boards are automatically given adjusted scores based on the play up to that point.
Note that when it says "The director has adjusted ..." it usually means that the system has adjusted the board.
In an unclocked tournament the faster pairs will move to the next round regardless of the time remaining on their clock as soon as they are finished if there is another pair available which will probably be another of the faster pairs. These pairs could possibly move through the tournament at about 4-5 minutes per board although occasionally they may have a lengthy wait while a slow pair catches up. Pairs might change direction from table to table.
The purpose of the clock in unclocked tourneys is to determine if a table will continue to play the rest of the boards in the round. When unclocked, any table not starting to bid a hand with at least 3 minutes left on the clock will have the rest of that round cancelled by BBO, not the TD. Averages are assigned by BBO to both sides and players don't even see the cards.
The clock is reset for each table each time they start a new round.
Nevertheless, players should always observe the specified allowance of 7 minutes per board.

Repeated disconnections while playing on Buchanan Online |
We know some of you have experienced temporary disconnections on BBO, and we appreciate how frustrating this must be for you. Often these only last for a few seconds and are hardly noticeable, or they only occur once, are not too disruptive and are not repeated for the rest of the tournament, in which case there is usually no reason for the Director to take any action.
If a disconnection cannot be resolved within a reasonable time, the Director will usually decide to make a substitution so that play can continue. Should this happen to you, it is important to remember that normally this is not a permanent exclusion and will give you an opportunity to check your connection before returning to the tournament. When you log back on, BBO will take you straight to your table at the earliest opportunity, usually in time for the start of the next board.
However, persistent and repeated disconnections by a particular player will inevitably impact on the smooth flow of the tournament - the other players are put under undue pressure to finish a round on time, and the Director may find it difficult give sufficient attention to calls from other tables. In these circumstances the Director may decide to substitute the player concerned for the rest of the tournament.
If you do have a persistent problem with your connection during play, you may wish to complete our new online form “Disconnection problems”. You can find this in the Buchanan Online section of the menu of the club website.
