V-Blue - Almost 1000 hands to play - 48 Lessons - ACOL and Standard American versions available

(1) What do you play as a suit overcall ? Good 5 card suit and 8-15 HCP ?   Weak Jump Overcall ? Intermediate Jump Overcall ? South's hand is plainly too strong for any overcall !

(2) What do you play for 1NT overcall ? 15-17 HCP with good stop ? 16-18 HCP with good stop ? South's hand is plainly too strong for any overcall !

(3) What do you play as 2NT overcall ? 20-22 HCP, balancved with a good stop ? Do you play the "Unusual NT" ? Neither of these bids describes you hand accurately.

(4) When your overcalls are inappropriate and/or you are too strong, do you think about DOUBLING which partner will understand as for TAKE OUT and will respond unless partner holds length and strength in the suit opened.

(5) When 2nd hand doubles, 4th hand will bid at MINIMUM LEVEL with 0-7 HCP and JUMP RESPONSE with 8+ HCP.

(6) Here partner does not bid 1♠  but 2♠  confirming 8+ HCP and probably 4+ spades, so you have found a SUIT FIT and SUFFICIENT FOR GAME IN SPADES.

(7) You see that you dummy holds 9 HCP so with your dummy you hold 28 HCP - to open East must hold at least 5 hearts and the remaining 12 HCP ?

(8) So long as you can reach dummy, you can finesse through East for any missing honour cards.

OBJECTIVE: BEST SCORE OR BID/MAKE GAME ?
OPENING THE BDDING & LIMIT BIDS

OPENING THE BIDDING & LIMIT BIDS (1)

When opening the bidding, the simplest opening bid is a LIMIT BID which describes in one bid the opener's strength and shape.

An opening bid of 1NT is a classic LIMIT BID - when playing "WEAK NT" an opening of 1NT shows:

12-14 HCP

no void,

no singleton,

not more than one singleton,

no 5+ card major (♠  &  )

no 6+ minor ( & ♣)

This means:

(a) that opener, havng desc ribes the hand in a single bid, does not need a RE-BID; and

(b) that responder is the CAPTAIN, ie is in charge of whether and how the bidding continues.

On this hand North and East pass, South opens 1NT ("WEAK NT") and all pass.

West leads, with a STANDARD LEAD of  K (top of hoour sequence) and South makes a plan before playing from Dummy.

South holds 3 Aces (♥A, ♦A and ♣A) and 4 tricks in Spades SO LONG AS SOUTH TAKES THE 4 TRICKS IN THE CORRECT ORDER.

When South takes the 1st trick, unless the ♠ Q is taken first and then ♠A ♠K and ♠J it will be impossible to take the 7 tricks needed to make the contract.
