Vale Barbara Conquest
You will be saddened to learn that one of our club members, Barbara Conquest, passed away on Saturday 17 April 2021 at her retirement home in Bendigo.
Barbara only recently joined BBC in 2020 but she will be remembered as a kind and considerate person who was dedicated to enjoying her bridge.
She was one of only seven "Bridge Teachers" accredited with the Victorian Bridge Association.
Although unwell, in recent months her health appeared to be improving and she was planning to resume face to face bridge in the near future, both at BBC and playing social bridge with friends but that, sadly, was not to be.
Her son advises that there will be a private funeral for family members only.

Members return for face to face bridge

Friday 15th January 2021 was the day when our members could anticipate each other’s company at the bridge table after the COVID recess.  The counting down had finally come, no more sleeps - time for battle.

Friend and foe at the one time, oh what bliss.

5 ½  tables is a good start after 1 pair withdrew at the last moment.  We trust that the pace of reopening and the scheduled events meet our member’s needs.

Some people had not played for 10 months, some had managed a few social games with friends, while others had braved the online world.

The rules for playing under COVID are very important and listed on the website.

  • Do not play if ill
  • Wash and sanitize regularly
  • wear a mask at all times

Members need to book sessions through the new website, and be in attendance at LGCC at least 10 minutes before play starts.  This last aspect will be enforced to ensure everyone is QR registered, temperature tested and seated.  IF you arrive after the 10 minutes to go cut-off time you and your partner will be asked to leave.

For the online crowd, learning to count the cards, sort them into suits and hold them was an experience forgotten.  To alert your partner's bid is also a “new” experience for online players.

Our directors have a task to relearn the laws of bridge, since in the online world it is not possible to revoke, bid out of turn or play out of turn, the computer controls all that.

Thank you to our small subcommittee of Rosemary Monotti, Bernadette Wood and Paul O’Hare whose diligence and attention to detail made this recommencement possible after the Match Committee set the parameters and decided it was time.

We also acknowledge our Committee and also the LGCC executive and committee, who have done a great job working with council and cleaners to have the hall ready for our use.
