PAYMENTS BY CHEQUE

We are phasing out the acceptance of cheques as payment of table money at B&BCBA events. At county events, table money will be cash only - cheques will not be accepted.  Cheques will continue to be accepted at the Green Point events.

PLASTIC WASTE

B&BCBA are keen to reduce the amount of plastic waste which result from the catering at events held at Windsor.   Firstly, we will phase out the use of plastic spoons and change to wooden stirrers.    Secondly, whilst it is not practical for B&BCBA to totally change to using china or other re-useable cups, players are encouraged to bring their own cups if they wish to.

EBU SUMMER SENIORS SWISS PAIRS

Congratulations to James Bond for winning the EBU Summer Seniors Swiss Pairs with Graham Marshall ( not B&B ). This was one of their successful hands.

James and Graham were EW. North the dealer. The auction was (P) - 1H - (3D) - 3H: (P) - 4H.

The 3D overcall was 11-16 and West did well to bid 3H. East expected a little more from West (of course) and raised to 4H. Most Souths would overcall 2D and then West's 2H may end the auction. The hidden spade fit made game a very good contract.

The KD lead was followed by 8H (covered) in an attempt to reduce ruffs in dummy. East realised that the long spades would cover two of the diamond losers so that meant ruffing one in dummy. So the JD was led, covered and ruffed. That also created potential for a later ruffing finesse of 10D. The spades were such that it was unlikely East could avoid a loser so at trick 4 he led a small spade from dummy. When North played low, James put in the 8. South won with the KS and returned a club. Now James drew trumps and claimed. Trumps slit 3-2 so the overtrick was made. Less than half the field were in game and not many made 11 tricks so James & Graham got 21/24 matchpoints.

OBA CONGRESS SWISS PAIRS 12 JUNE 2021

Richard Bowdery of Berks & Bucks won the Swiss Pairs event at the recent Oxfordshire Green Point weekend.

Richard and his partner won six out of their seven matches and finished 3 VPs clear of second place.

This was an impressive win against a very strong field. Many congratulations.

OBA CONGRESS SWISS TEAMS 13 JUNE 2021

The (Berks & Bucks) team of Gordon Maxwell, Marc Rivoira, Barry Read and Ilan Sirkis won the Swiss Teams event at the recent Oxfordshire Green Point weekend.

A fantastic win against a very strong field. Many congratulations. A great performance showing the strength of Berks & Bucks bridge.

The new Chairman would like to take some credit for inspiring the team but he cannot !!

This hand was in the final match ( Board 43 out of 49 ) and gained the team 11 Imps.

Dealer S - both NV

At the home table with our hero’s playing N/S, the bidding went P-P-3D-Passed out.

So North play in 3D when most of the field played in 4S by E/W

KS was lead, taken by the A. QD to the A and a second spade.

Trumps were cleared leaving E on lead, West showing something in Clubs.

JH was a good move by East but West was not on the same wavelength and went up with the AH.

Declarer dropped KH under the A to create a vital entry to dummy.

Maybe this disturbed West as they then cashed AC and declarer could make the rest by using the well created heart entry to take the club finesse.

Five diamonds, one spade, one heart and two clubs brought the contract home.

At the other table events went differently.

The bidding went  P-2NT! ( this shows an intermediate hand with a long minor) -3D-3S-P-4S

West deciding everything in his hand was working 100% after hearing partner has 5+ spades.

In fact, 4S was played at many tables and is cold as the cards lay due to the favourable hearts - but it is not easy for declarer.

The automatic QD was led.

Declarer set about disposing of the diamond losers - so AD, ruff a diamond  (South discarding a heart), low club back to hand with North rising with the KC at which point declarer can't go wrong.
