Visit to Aix-en-Provence: A report ... |
On the first Tuesday in July a party of 15 from Bath took the plane to Marseille in order to pay our second visit to Bath's twin city of Aix-en-Provence. We should have been 16 but unfortunately Mike Trevanion was taken ill the day before we set out and was thus unable to join us.
We played at the three different clubs in the Aix area that we did two years ago and had an equally enjoyable time. The partnership of Steve Stafford and Andrew Clarke were winners at two of the sessions, thus keeping the Bath visitors "in the frame" a couple of times. Socially, we had a very pleasant time, one highlight being a visit to Picasso's home: tickets had been very hard to come by as this was a once only summer opening. We were given a reception on the first evening and some of the party attended an opera on the Wednesday. On the final evening we enjoyed a farewell dinner at which we were joined by officials from the three clubs involved and two of the twinning staff from the Aix city council.
Very warm weather was enjoyed throughout the stay and we returned on the Saturday having all enjoyed a most pleasant visit. Hopefully we will be able to reciprocate the visit by entertaining our friends from Aix here in Bath in 2010.
