Setting up your side suit winners |
Show Detail |
When responding North shows his 4-card diamond suit first. South jumps to 2NT which denies either major so North just raises to 3NT. West leads the ♠4. You can see three spades, one heart and two diamonds in top tricks so you are three tricks short. How will you make the contract?

It would be wrong to take your other spade winners after winning the opening lead before wondering what to do next. You need three extra tricks. The diamond finesse will only give you one extra trick even if it is right, so you must set up the club suit while you retain control in the other suits. Lead a small club towards the queen. West will win and persevere with spades, but you can win again and lead ♣J from hand. West will win this one too but now the danger is passed. Win the return from West and you have three club tricks set up in the South hand. |
