Message from ABF President

Dear Competitors, Officials and Friends

First and foremost, a warm welcome to this 11th edition of our African Championships (Zone 8) which, for the first time in our history, will be played on RealBridge, a very modern and practical Bridge platform, which offers us the opportunity to play, on-line, a reliable and serious competition whilst seated comfortably in our countriesI know and appreciate the fact that you all prefer our « live » encounters but the current « Covid-related » circumstances which

prevent us from enjoying this luxury; having said that, the consolation is the fact that it will cost our NBOs far less than what we usually spend in travel & hotels

The format of this year’s competition has been approved by the ABF and it will be different this time. What we already know is that, during the first week, both the Open (Bermuda Bowl) and the Women (Venice cup) will qualify two Teams for the World Championships and, during the second week, both the Seniors (D’Orsi Senior Bowl) and the Mixed (Wuhan Cup) will qualify two Teams for the World Championships.

You may wonder whether or not the WBF will be able to decide the organisation of the World Championships « live » and all I can say is « do not lose hope », there are still good chances it will happen towards the end of February beginning of March 2022.

The agenda for this year’s Event is as follows:

  • Saturday 29th & Sunday 30th May => All Africa Pairs
  • Monday 1st to Sunday 6th June => Open & Women Qualifications
  • Monday 7th to Sunday 13th June => Seniors & Mixed Qualifications

As you already know, the mere reason why we are holding these Championships over a two-week period is to allow Federations (who prefer it this way) to enter their best players (who did not qualify during the first week in either the Open or the Women categories) again in the « Seniors » or the « Mixed » categories provided, of course, that these players have qualified earlier to represent their NBOs in these categories as well

 Waleed ElMenyawi, our « Jack of all Trades », will be our « Chef d’Orchestre » and will handle both the full Operation and Directing of our event. In doing so, Waleed will be backed by a Team of dynamic & hard workers; I will communicate their names in due time

Before I close this first and important communication, let me just remind you all the forthcoming key deadlines:

  • Registration of all teams => April 30th
  • Convention Cards => May 15th
  • Testing Sessions on RealBridge => 21st, 22nd and 23rd May

On behalf of the African Bridge Federation, I would like to wish you all very competitive and thrilling Bridge weeks and look forward to congratulating players who will represent our Zone 8 at the Bermuda Bowl, Venice Cup, D’Orsi Senior Bowl & Wuhan Cup.

Finally, as our dear President, Gianarrigo Rona, keeps repeating: In order to defeat hatred, we play the card of Peace so let us exercise this in June!

Best of success and enjoyment to all

Bernard Pascal

President, Zone 8
