FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How does the contactless and cashless payment system work

Debits to your account:

Each time you play a game (either online or at the Club), an entry is debited to your account at the appropriate rate. This is linked to your account through your EBU number (or in cases where you do not have an EBU number, it will use your club local number).

If you book lessons or attend a club run seminar for which there is a charge, this will similarly be logged to your account at the agreed rate.

Credits to your account:

Payments made by you into your account, through any agreed method, will be credited to your account using the EBU number (or in cases where you do not have an EBU number, it will use your club local number).

Other credits that might appear include credits from the club for agreed items such as acting as a TD or a host.

The balance:

This is simply the amount you have paid in or been credited less any charges debited. You are asked to kindly keep your account in credit and to have sufficient funds available before registering or playing a club session.

Notifications:

If your account becomes ‘overdrawn’ you will receive an automatically generated email asking you to top-up your account.

You may also receive reminders if you balance falls below £8

Can I pay for others?

Yes, the new payment system will allow you to pay for others – how does this work?

If this is a permanent arrangement, please email statements@theyorkbridgeclub.com to advise of the name and EBU number of the person paying and the same details for the person being paid for. Please clearly advise that this is to be a permanent arrangement until otherwise notified.

A link will then be created so that the second person’s games will be paid by the first. Obviously, you can have an informal method to refund you partner in any way that you agree if you are pairing.

For one-off payments for partners, you will need to email statements@theyorkbridgeclub.com to advise the session and the names and EBU numbers of the players being paired. Please ensure it is clear which member is paying and that this is a one-off request.

Playing with Visitors

At the club, the visitor will be able to pay using the contactless terminal.

Online visitors will need to pre-register with sgregory@theyorkbridgeclub.com (as they do at present). This will allow us to set them up on the system and to establish whether they wish to pay through this system or through a pairing arrangement.

What happens if I don’t have enough money – can I still play?

All accounts should be kept in credit. However, we accept that occasionally things get missed and you may not have enough in your YBC bridge club account to pay the table money. You will still be able to play and your account will go into debit. The system will then issue an automatic reminder to top up your account.

How do I pay money into my club account?

  1. Bank Transfer: If you use online banking, you can credit directly to your account using the following bank details:

The York Bridge Club,

Barclays Bank,

Sort code: 20-99-56,

A/c no: 83438961

Reference YKnnnnnn  - where nnnnnn is your 6 digit EBU number. We will be providing all members with a reminder of this number shortly. Note: If you have a 5 digit EBU number, please preface it with an additional zero (YK0nnnnn).

IMPORTANT: please use your unique YK six digit reference number on all payments into you YBC account to ensure funds are correctly attributed to you. This will also ensure that the application of funds are not delayed to your account owing to the Finance team having to contact you for further information. You should also use your EBU number as your ID number when accessing any real bridge sessions.

  1. Standing Order – details as (1)

  1. Using the contactless terminal when attending a club session. You can credit any amount to your account at this time. Again, you should use the reference YKnnnnnn.

  1. PAYPAL – details as per 1&2 above

  1. We are not intending to accept cash payments at the club.

If you wish to use cash, please arrange for a friend or partner to takes this and either make the deposit to your YBC account for you or use the ’paying for others’ (pairing) option above. They will need your EBU number to do this. If you have difficulties with this, please speak to Stuart Kay in confidence.

  1. We would prefer not to accept cheques. We hope that one of the alternative ways of paying (including ‘pairing’) will be suitable for you and that cheques will not therefore be required. If, however, your still have no alternative method for paying, please contact Stuart (skay@theyorkbridgeclub.com) in the first instance for a confidential chat to see what arrangements we can put in place to help you.

How can I see my account transactions?

You will have a personal login to your account via the Club’s webpages. From here you will be able to see transactions and to request emailed copies of your statement.

For those people who do not have access to the internet, we will print and post a copy of your statement on a monthly basis (or you can arrange to collect this when visiting the club).

What do I do if there is an error on my account?

There is a dedicated email address to deal with all queries related to the payment system. (statements@theyorkbridgeclub.com) Simply email you query and remember to include your reference so that we can easily find you details.

What system is being used and is my data secure?

We are using a system called BriAnMas which has been developed in conjunction with Richmond Bridge Club (one of the largest clubs in the country). It is now used by a growing number of clubs throughout the country. Minimal data is used by the system and all data is held in a GDPR compliant database securely on the cloud.

Does it matter where I play?

No:

We have selected a payment system that will allow for playing at the club and/or online in the same way. If you are playing online with the club on whatever system the session is running on (BBO/Real Bridge/Pianola) (including any online systems such as bridgeclublive that the club does not currently use), the payment mechanism will work in the same way and provide a seamless way of payment for you.

Does York Bridge Club cater for and welcome people with disabilities?

We especially welcome people with disabilities and our new Clubhouse has been especially designed to  meet the needs of people with disabilities. The Clubhouse is on one level and is suitable for wheelchair or small motorised scooter users. Our sessions are organised so that people with mobility issues do not have to change tables. There are two toilets suitable for disabled people. If you are partially sighted and attend a bridge session we have several sets of low vision cards. Please let us know if you would like us to use them.

Where should I park my car when I visit the Bridge Club?

Car parking is available at the rear of the Club premises. In addition car parking is available behind the Acomb Sports Club.  There are three spaces reserved for people with mobility problems. Care should be taken when using our onsite car parking with consideration for other users. Parking on the Club premises is entirely at the owner’s own risk. Unrestricted car parking in easy walking distance is available on The Green.

What other transport options should I consider when visiting York Bridge Club?

The following buses go past the Club – numbers 1, 4, 5, 5A and 24 and 214 Wetherby bus. Cycle racks will shortly be  available at the back of the Club premises for up to 8 cycles, but there is also sufficient space in the rear car park to accommodate more cycles if required.

Can I still attend bridge sessions if I don’t have a bridge partner?

Please use the pianola partner finder if you do not have a partner. You can register your details on Pianola enabling you to advertise for a partner for a particular session. You will need to provide your email address and/or telephone number and somebody seeing your advert will hopefully contact you to arrange a game.  We will try to find any unmatched partners someone to play with but cannot guarantee this. Many members play with several different partners. Once you get to know more Club members you can often find a partner by word of mouth.

I am a complete beginner or have lapsed bridge skills. How can I get involved with York Bridge Club?

York Bridge Club is always interested in meeting prospective new members. You don’t have to become a member straight away. We offer teaching courses for beginners and improvers so you can give the Club a try without any initial commitment. If you have played before but aren’t quite ready to play in a normal bridge session, you can attend a guided play, an improver or social session. These are led by a teacher or experienced player who will happily provide advice. The pace of play is relaxed and you will play with others of a similar level of experience and ability.

How do I know which sessions are best suited for my standard of play?

York Bridge Club offers a range of bridge sessions to suit players of all abilities. We have written a Standard of Play Guide to enable you to decide which sessions are most appropriate for you to attend. The guide is on the website and its colour coded and easy to use. Inexperienced players may choose to attend a guided play session. Once you are more confident with your bidding the next step is to play at an improver session on either a Friday morning or Monday evening. Standards of play at the other sessions do vary but the Guide should enable you to select a session most appropriate to your needs. But remember the best way to improve your game is to challenge yourself by playing against better players.

Do I have to play a bridge system when attending sessions at the Club?

No, but you will soon pick up or learn what others are doing. Practice does vary between the different bridge sessions. On Friday mornings only simple systems are allowed (to be found by clicking gentle duplicate on the website) and likewise on Monday evenings. At other sessions a Convention Card showing agreements between you and your partner can be very helpful but is not obligatory. Hard copy convention Cards are available at the Club for you to take away and complete for use. Alternatively if you prefer to use an electronic version it can be downloaded from the EBU website.
