A Jacoby 2NT bid in response to partner’s one of a Major suit opening promises:
- 4+ card support for partner's major
- shows at least a raise to game in their Major suit.
The 2NT bid should be alerted and, if asked about described as “at lease a game forcing raise in my suit”.
There are various versions of responses to this artificial 2NT bid, probably the best (and most popular) is : -
After 1♥ - 2NT
3♣ = ♣ shortage (singleton or void)
3♦ = ♦ shortage (singleton or void)
3♥ = extra length 5+ cards and 12-14 hcp ish
3♠ = ♠ shortage (singleton or void)
3NT = Strong, Balanced hand 15+ hcp 4333 or 4432 or 5332, no shortage
4♣ = a good, 5 card ♣ suit
4♦ = a good 5 card ♦ suit
4♥ = minimum opening bid, 10-12 hcp no slam interest whatsoever
Similarly after 1♠ - 2NT
3♣ = ♣ shortage (singleton or void)
3♦ = ♦ shortage (singleton or void)
3♥ = ♥ shortage (singleton or void)
3♠ = extra length 5+ cards and 12-14 hcp ish
3NT = Strong, Balanced hand 15+ hcp 4333 or 4432 or 5332, no shortage
4♣ = a good 5 card ♣ suit
4♦ = 5 good card ♦ suit
4♠ = minimum opening bid, 10-12 hcp no slam interest whatsoever
- All subsequent bids are game forcing, a suit bid being be a cue bid.
- A shortage bid may be a singleton or void. A subsequent cue bid of the shortage suit would then show a void.
- Bid a good 5 card 2nd suit (source of tricks) in preference to showing a singleton. Note, a good suit contains 2 of the 3 top Honours. Eg AQ984 or KQT63
