Barnacle Cup

Leslie Barnacle was a founder member and committee member for many years. She sat south at table 5 so that she could survey the room. She smoked incessantly with the cigarette in the corner of her mouth and smoke in her eyes. She was a charming women who always had a smile for you. When the block of flats was built on the northeast corner of Byron Road she bought one straight away, as did other widows in the Club. This cup is given to the best player on Wednesday afternoons. Current holder :- Alan Jeffrey.

Chairman's Cup

I don't know who presented this cup. Does anyone know? This is an individual competition for a team's event held on the 2nd Thursdays. Current holders :- Brian Hart, David Hughes, Roger Pyart, Mike Rounds.

Curry Cup

I know nothing about Iris Curry except that she owned the Club after the Ricardos and before Derek Boreham. She presented her cup when she left to go to live in London. Her cup is presented on the Friday evening of the Club weekend to the winners of the Mixed Pairs.  Current joint winners :-

Goblets

These are played for on the Saturday of the Club weekend in the Open Pairs competition on Saturday evening. There are no clues on the cups as to who presented them. Does anyone know? Current holders :-

Goff Cup

Winnie Goff, a founder member. She always sat at table 2. She died in 1993 aged 98. She was a Queen Alexandra ambulance driver in WWI, a dangerous occupation.

Courage was not an unusual trait in her family, both her grandfather and her great uncle won VCs in India in 1857, went on to become generals and were knighted. Her father and uncle rose to the most senior ranks and her uncle won the VC in action in Somaliland in 1904. Her brother was a commander of a parachute brigade in WWII and was knighted.

The cup is won by the best player who owns less than 10,000 points and plays on Monday evening.. Current Holder :- Jeremy Attwood.

Goulding Cup

Mary Goulding was a founder member. The most surprising thing that I remember about Mary is that she was the only Labour councillor on Worthing council. She was a generous women and provided us with all those storage cupboards on the landing and in the Pink Room. The cup is awarded to the best player with over 10,000 points playing on Monday evening. Current joint holders :- Ian & Barbara Gordon.

Harrison Salver

Another chain smoker. Eve always played with George Yarnell and the two of them spent every winter cruising the high seas in cargo ships. She was very sun burnt and also always very smartly turned out. They always sat north/south upstairs.  This cup is presented to the best player on Wednesday evenings. Current Holder : Mike Rounds.

Heads Salver

This salver was presented to the Club in 1938 by the Club's owners, Mr & Mrs LW Head. It is played for in the Club weekend's team competition which is a two session event held on the Sunday. Current holders :- Mary Oates, Geraldine Springer, Gillian Skelton & Roy Skelton

Hill Trophy

This is Worthing's premier teams event, played in November and everyone is invited. It was presented by Colonel HiIl, founder member of the Club .  Current holders :- Gerry Stanford,Dave Franklin, Neil Watts & Nilgel Urben.

The League Cup

This cup is awarded to the winners of The Worthing Club League. Current Holders :-

Marks Cup

This cup presented by Basil Marks,  is won by the best player on Monday afternoons. Current holder :- Laurence Chiswell.

Palmer Cup

This cup is played for on Thursday evening and is presented to the best player who has less than 5000 points. Current holder :- Jerry Attwood.

Pollard Cup

This cup, presented by Mary Pollard, is played for on the Thursday evening of the Club weekend and is for players with less than 5000 points. Current joint holders :- Jeremy Attwood & John Hardy

Ricardo Cup

This was presented by Evelyn Ricardo, a Welsh international who was the second owner of the Club. A jolly lady she played there regularly in the 60s and probably before. I think that she reached 100 years. Current holders:- Lynda & Colin Smith.

Not Currently Played

Boreham Cup

Derek sold the Club to members in the early 70s. The Committee have decided to award this cup to the pair with the best score out of the two sessions played in the Sussex Simultaneous  Pairs which is run at the beginning of the year. Current Holders :- Not currently awarded.

Flitch Cup

Presented by Gordon and Joan Pinker in 1974. Joan (an honorary member of the Club) remembers them going to the Silver Vaults in Chancery Lane to find just what they wanted. It's a Victorian Chalice. It's presented to the winner of the annual married couple's competition. The prizes were: a gammon and a pack of sausages. This dates back to the village of Dunmow where this prize was originally awarded to the married couple in the village who hadn't quarreled for a year and a day. The couple who told this lie got the prize. As the Club has so few married couples playing together it has not been played for since 2006 when it was won by Joan and Geoff Kellett. Joan has taken the cup home until she and the Committee decide on a new format.

Head & Coram-Wright Brooches

These are marcasite brooches and were presented to the winners of the annual Women's Pairs event. They were given to the Club by Mrs Head (the original owner of the Club in the 1930s) and Vera Coram-Wright. Vera always sat at table 3 with her partner Mary Fish, who was one of our strongest players. Mary partnered Harold Birch (founder member, founder chairman and Premier Life Master when green points were very much harder to earn) when he was a beginner! The brooches are no longer presented and small brooches used to be presented as permanent prizes to replace them.  The Committee have decided to reintroduce this practice. Current holders :-

Kent Cup

Jessica Kent's Cup is the trophy for the annual open pairs competition. Tim Kent, Jessica's son, is a member of the Club and presents the trophy to the winners. Current holders :- Tim tells me that Jessica loved to play bridge at the Club and at home and was very proud to reach the rank of Master. (This was when master points were much harder to acquire.) She was very smartly dressed at all times and always wore a turban. See her photograph at the beginning of this page.

Marshall Martin Cup

This cup presented by Mrs C Marshall Martin was for rubber bridge. It was first won in 1936. It was last won in 1967 by Molly Guinness and Elizabeth North.

Neele Salver

This cup presented by Vivian Neele was won by the best player on Friday afternoons. Current holder :- Not currently awarded.

Parker Cup

Pat Parker was tragically accidently killed whilst on holiday in Scotland with her son. Her son presented the Club with her trophy to be presented to the winner of the Club's Individual Competition. Current holder :- Not currently awarded.

Robertson Trophy

Billy Robertson was an active and well loved committee member before his sudden untimely death. His trophy, a salver,  used to be played for on Friday evenings. The last winner was George Cooke in 2006. It is now presented to the novice player in the Novelty Pairs played on the Saturday afternoon of the Club weekend. Current Holder :- Susan Macdonald.

Skiming Trophy

This trophy was the Chairman's trophy and was played for on Saturday night - a teams' event. Leslie Skiming was a founder member and chairman for 20 years, following his son Brian into the post. Brian now lives in Jersey. Leslie always sat north at table 1 and smoked a pipe THE WHOLE TIME. The air was blue. In those days smoking was de rigueur. All the committee smoked so getting a no smoking ban required a resolution at the AGM. Although I'd been a member for several years it was the first AGM that I attended. It was packed and the ban was passed. The Committee was not happy.  The trophy was presented to the best player of the year who has less than 25 green points and was played for on Saturday evening.
