Newsletter  - December/January 2013

A Very Happy and Successful New Year to all members.

Forthcoming Events

This year’s AGM will be held on Saturday 9 March at 10.30am.

Do make a note in your diary about the club weekend to be held on 16-19 May 2013.  It is a great occasion made possible by a great deal of hard work by your committee, and should be supported. You will not regret it!

More help is always appreciated so please contact Fran Thornton to offer assistance.

Winter Sunday bridge takes place every two weeks in the afternoon and has grown in popularity.  If anyone is interested they should contact Jerry Attwood.

Please refer to the committee reports to find out about forthcoming Pro-Ams.

From Your Committee

2013 AGM  SATURDAY MARCH 9TH at 10.30am

Nomination forms for electing your next committee members will be on the notice board in the near future.  Forms will also be available for those wishing to put any items on the agenda.

Some of the current committee members are standing down either having served for a number of years or due to other commitments.  Therefore we need to appoint a new vice chairman and at least two committee members.

We also require some more volunteers to work alongside the committee to enable our regular events to take place throughout the year.

There are a number of volunteers already who help behind the scenes to keep things going, and without them we would struggle to meet our commitments.

It is essential for others to join this group to enable the load to be shared. The areas I have in mind are HOSTING, HILLS TROPHY and the CLUB WEEKEND.  Help with CATERING at the Club Weekend and on other occasions is required to ensure that these successful events continue.

To you all, remember this is your club and we should all be taking some small part in its continued success.

Trophies

Can the holders of trophies from last year please return them to a committee member no later than the middle of February so they can be engraved prior to the AGM.

Trophy Winners for 2012

Ricardo Cup                              Roger Bill & Roland Heathfield

Palmer Cup                                Jerry Attwood

Chairman’s Cup                          Ken Shillam, Brian Hart & Mike Rounds

Congratulations to all you.

Hosting

As mentioned above we need more people to host at the club.  Numbers are dropping and it is unfair to expect just a few members to share the hosting.  The more hosts we have the fewer times you do it.  A big thank you to all who currently take part in what has been agreed is a success.  We don’t want to lose it.

Catering

Gillian has put a lot of hard work in to make a success of the catering at certain events at the club.  Again it would be helpful if she could get others to help her.  There are not that many functions to help at so could you please let Gillian know if you can assist her.

Pro-Am

Due to the AGM the March date has to be cancelled.  We are going to make it every two months from the April date to allow more time to organise the event.  This will also minimise the conflict with the second year teaching group, which has first preference to Thursday afternoons.   These classes will finish in May and therefore parking will be easier for the June date onwards.

New dates:

Thursday February 7th     Organiser – Ernie

Thursday April 4th           Organiser – Gillian

Thursday June 6th           Organiser – Helga/Fran

Thursday August 1st         Organiser – Alexa

Thursday October 3rd      Organiser – Ernie

My thanks to the Pro’s that have given up their time to help with this event; I know the less experienced players appreciate it.

I have been told that this event and the mentoring that we started last year has become a bench mark in the county.

Hills Trophy

A date for the diary for this year’s event is Sunday 17th November.  The venue has still to be finalised.

Bidding Cards

By the time you read this we should have replaced the cardboard bidding cards with plastic as the originals were becoming worn, faded and sticky.  Hopefully the plastic will not only last longer but can be cleaned if necessary.

Financial

The club finances have managed to survive heavy expenditure in bringing the building up to a satisfactory state of repair over the last 18months.  It is hoped that this will prevent further work in the next few years.

The new heating arrangement is expected to save the club a significant amount of money each year now that a new three year contact has been agreed with EDF which involves a saving of 20% on the daily charge and unit price against what we have been paying.  This new contract pricing starts on 1st January.

There are two outstanding pieces of work still to complete and that is painting the outside window frames now delayed until better weather early next year.  At some point the downstairs playing area will need redecoration.

Your committee has managed to find ways to save money over the last year.  We are therefore pleased to say that despite the high building expenditure, that table money and the annual membership fee will remain the same for 2013.

Newsletter  - October/November 2012

Our President, Alan Jeffery, writes

The Club

The members of our committee have passed the halfway mark in their promise to look after us for another year and in my opinion have been very successful in doing so. They began with a huge agenda and wisely started an assessment of our building, which is 128 years old. Minor problems including brickwork and subsidence have been successfully dealt with and financial provision for eventual roof repairs assessed. Electrical installations have been assessed and repaired to meet current electrical safety standards. After many experiments the heating problem has been solved and although it is a case of being unable to please all of the people all of the time the results have pleased the majority.

Bridgewise they have excelled themselves. New sessions, recruitment classes, mentoring groups and the huge success of the Pro Am events have brought new life into the club. The happy atmosphere we lost nearly two years ago has returned. Well done, indeed.  Negatives?  Yes and one they cannot do much about. There are too few players, the lifeblood of the club. We can do something about this if every member of the club tried to play one more session per month.  Can you?

Finally as a happy out of work club President, I shall be keeping my fingers crossed that Chairman Ernie Rivett and his over-worked secretary Fran Thornton, together with their excellent team, are willing to continue taking care of us when the AGM is held next spring.

The Book 25 Bridge Conventions For Acol Players £11.95 from Chess and Bridge

published in 2006 but given a simple title that failed to advertise the wealth of detailed information concerning almost every aspect of our favourite game. A perfect read for all newcomers who have successfully passed basic Acol or basic standard bridge lessons with our teachers as well as all players who seek to improve the standard of their bridge.

Bridge Tips

I have stopped bidding 2NT when opening a hand of 20-22 points. I open 2NT with 20 points, 2 diamonds ( multi, forcing) and my rebid of 2NT shows 21 points. With 22 points I open an Acol 2 club and my rebid of 2NT shows 22 – 24 points. I have found this change helps considerably with the bidding after a 2NT opener particularly when reaching the slam zone.  I realise it means bringing in the multi 2 diamond but this is a favourite of mine, because I believe it is loaded in favour of the user. Give it a thought during the days leading up to a Happy and Merry Christmas.

Forthcoming Events

Christmas Party

The work involved by Gillian last year over several sessions, regarding the catering, was too much to repeat this year, so the committee has decided to try and hold it on Friday 14th December starting at 16.00 until 20.00 with a break for a finger buffet about half way through the session.  A charge of £5/person will be made.  A Bucks Fizz or soft drink will be available within the price.  A notice is up, asking for the names of those interested to establish whether there is sufficient member interest.  It is appreciated that some members will not be able to attend due to day time commitments, but this is a compromise to try and accommodate evening and afternoon members.

The hands will be dealt using the Duplimate but a random draw for partners will be made.  The results will not be used for any of the ladders as this is a one off event.

Sunday Bridge

A bridge session is being held at the club every alternate Sunday from Sunday 11th November, the next one being on the 25th. A number of members have shown an interest. Anyone interested should contact Jerry Attwood for confirmation of the dates.

Pro-Am and Mentoring Sessions

For those involved 2013 dates for both these events are now on the notice board.

For December this will be on 6th December at 2pm. We will be providing Buck’s Fizz and Fran’s mince pies. We are intending to charge £2 but to donate all takings to a local charity.

For the pro-ams there is an issue with the large numbers attending. May we suggest that members park at the west end of Shelley Road, only a short walk away, where parking is 50p for 4 hours.

We are looking for a few more mentors to help with the mentoring classes held every third Thursday in the month. If available and interested could you add your name to the list on the notice board clearly marking your name as mentor.

The new heating arrangement is expected to save the club a significant amount of money each year now that a new three year contact has been agreed with EDF which involves a saving of 20% on the daily charge and unit price against what we have been paying.  This new contract pricing starts on 1st January.

Your committee has managed to find ways to save money over the last year.  We are therefore pleased to say that despite the high building expenditure, that table money and the annual membership fee will remain the same for 2013.

Housekeeping

It would be appreciated if members at the end of a session ensure that all crockery and glasses used are returned to the kitchen and not left for others to clear up.  In addition could you return chairs under the table.  If any of the chairs from upstairs are brought downstairs for use, please  return them  upstairs at the end of a session, as there is not enough room for them to be left downstairs.  Now that winter is here can we please keep the outside door closed at all times otherwise the entrance hall will continue to feel cold.

Your cooperation with these requests will be appreciated.

We also have six plain white cups and saucers missing if anyone knows why, can they let a committee member know.

Behaviour at the Table

There have been a number of incidents of poor behaviour at the table over the last few weeks.  I will repeat what I have said at the last two AGMs, that this is not acceptable especially when less experienced players are on the receiving end.  If we are to encourage these players into the club then some consideration should be given to them while they are still gaining experience.  If you have an issue the director should be called, which will allow the matter to be resolved in a calm manner.

Unauthorised notice removal

A simple system description notice has been removed from the notice board by someone. It is going to be replaced and the committee would appreciate it being left on the board.

At a newly introduced mid week County Swiss Pairs event, held recently at Henfield, that Fran Thornton and Tilly Hennings were joint second and Elizabeth Hornsey and Avril Strong won the Non-experts prize.  Well done!

Membership

A reminder that 2013 membership fees, will be due from 1st January.  If members have an email address can they please let Rosemary Churchill have it to simplify contact and avoid using the postal system which is becoming expensive now that the price of stamps has risen significantly.  Any email addresses given to Rosemary will not be given out to anyone unless agreed first by the owner.

BRIDGEMATES UPDATE

Dear Members

I thought it appropriate to let you know the current position with the introduction of the Bridgemates scoring system to the club sessions.

As some of you know we have held several trial sessions, over the past weeks, to enable us to understand the system and identify and correct any issues that arose. We are grateful to the Bognor Bridge Club who has helped us in this process.

Those trials are now complete, and therefore we held a training session for directors and helpers last Tuesday to run through the instructions that were drawn up, for reference by those using the system. A sufficient number of people attended to make it successful which resulted in a few amendments to the instructions. A list of those who attended is at the bottom of this newsletter.

We now feel confident to start and use the Bridgemates at all the forth coming sessions, W/B 28th November 2011, where the director feels confident to use them and sufficient help is available to him/her. Therefore there may still be occasional sessions where the old paper system is used for this reason. At least two of the people on the list below must be present, ideally a director plus helper.

I intend to use the next few weeks as a settling in period so that all involved will feel comfortable in setting up and using them.

I am aware that certain features available within the Bridgemates are still not activated for use e.g. leads and who played the contract. These will be introduced in due course but hi the meantime can I ask for your patience while we get everyone familiar with their standard operation. Remember Rome was not built hi a day.

We may still get the odd problem but I am certain that come the New Year, Worthing BC with cooperation from everyone involved, will be using Bridgemates successfully.

PS Can I ask that when the Bridgemates are in operation and until the final results are issued that any devices using a wireless connection are switched off as they may interfere with the Bridgemates wireless signal to the server.

WORTHING BRIDGE CLUB

FINANCIAL REVIEW

As mentioned at the AGM, the committee is reviewing the Bridge Club finances both on a day to day basis and for the future.  With rising costs it is essential to control the club expenses but at the same time ensuring that members get full value for their money.

The committee over the last 15 months has needed to spend a significant amount of the Club’s funds on routine maintenance of the building and equipment for ongoing operation of the Bridge Club.  There is still further building maintenance to be completed.

Therefore money has to be generated from savings to our running costs to fund these expenses and ensure we have enough in our capital reserves to fund high cost unexpected expenses, for example roof repairs.

The first part of this review has highlighted two areas which can be addressed immediately to generate these savings.

1.      Replacement of what are now old radiators throughout the Club with more energy efficient units.  The best option radiators are still being evaluated, but it is a priority to have them installed by the autumn.

Where will the savings come from?

·         Currently our energy bill is £2,000 per year; this can be reduced by renegotiating our electricity tariff to a 3 year contract from the current 1 year.

·         Going to a single Standard charge instead of the current two, we have Economy 7 and a standard rate.

·         Fit radiators that can be programmed to only heat the club when it is being used, i.e. Monday to Thursday.  Last winter we were heating the Club for seven days.

How much will these changes save?

A conservative estimate is £500 to £700 per year, but this depends on the new negotiated electricity contract.

2.      The Voucher system.

As explained at the AGM, we give a free voucher with every book sold and so we lose 18p on each £2 voucher.  Although this does not seem much, it is costing the Club over £900 a year and it would be even higher if everyone bought vouchers.  It has only been possible to arrive at this figure following a full year of operation.

The following decision has not been arrived at without due consideration, by your committee, and is required to maintain a viable financial position for the future.

We cannot continue to operate in this manner so, rather than increase the table money to cover the loss, we intend to stop selling books of vouchers from the 1st of September but with the following provisos:

·         All vouchers already purchased plus those purchased until August 31st will be honoured.

·         Vouchers will still be issued to Hosts and be usable as table money in the future.

·         Vouchers will still be issued to the winning pair(s) and be usable as table money in the future.

·         In all other instances we will revert back to £2 table money in cash.

In all these two changes should save us at least £1,500 per year, a considerable amount which can be used to members’ benefit.  These decisions have not been taken lightly and should be seen as part of sensible financial management of the Bridge Club resources.

The committee will continue to review whether there are other areas where savings can be made.

Ernie Rivett
