TEAM CAPTAINS’ REPORT

First Team: Phil reported:  “I am very pleased to report that the First Team had an even better season than last year with a higher finish of 3rd in the First Division.  We won 5 matches out of 10, only losing our last match of the season to Gambit by 12 – 8 our best result against them.

Congratulations and my thanks to all the team members, Ray, Clive, Jane, Keith, Kyra, Toni and Steve.  Also to Phil Wood, Phil Meats and John Edwards who also represented the Club.  We were fortunate in being able to field a settled team for most of the matches, and were able to release some players for the second team.

I have enjoyed a number of seasons as Captain of the first team and I’m very pleased to be handing over the reins to Steve Fordham.  I’m sure the team will go forward to the next level under Steve, particularly as we seem to have a bigger player base to choose from.

Second  Team:  Ray Furlonger read out Julia’s report. “For the 2012-13 season we were playing in Division 3, having come up from Div 4. Our aim was to do well enough to stay in this division and I am pleased to say that we did achieve this. We came 3rd out of 6 teams.14 club members played in the 2nd team: Teddy Fullick, Joan Brook, Eric Poyser, Judith Gamble, John Edwards, Phil Meats, Ian Buchan, John Glass, Judith Glass, Iris Smith, Toni Smith, Steve Fordham, Ruth Hooper, and myself

My thanks go to all who played and special thanks to those who made up a pairing with someone they had little experience of playing with. I think everyone played very well. I was never greatly disappointed with a match result.   We were without Keith and his computer this season.  However, I did remember to take my laptop and with the help of others, especially Phil Meats and John Edwards we managed to get the scoring done efficiently. Thanks to John Glass for opening up the hall and loaning his bridge equipment for most home matches. The ladies in the team were as helpful as ever with organising the half time refreshments.

The season ended with our challenge against the 1st team and…… we nearly beat them!  If I remember correctly, we were leading until the last quarter.  The result was 11-9 to the first team. Honour was saved by all.”

Team of Four:  Ray Furlonger reported that the Team finished third in the first Division.

TREASURER’S REPORT

Mike Jefferies reported that the Club was in a stable condition with a small excess over income of £71.02, compared to £42.19 the previous year.  Funds available were slightly down at £664.34.  Membership had increased from 47 to 56 due to the membership drive held earlier in the year. The average number of tales had increased from just over six to just under seven.   It was reported that it would not take much for the Club to find themselves operating at a loss therefore it was proposed to increase weekly table fee to £2 from £1.50, visitors to pay £3.  The annual membership fees would remain at £7.  This was considered to be very good value for money with quality biscuits organised by Ruth.

Proposed by R Furlonger, seconded P Dale.

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

Keith Spencer was pleased to report a large number of new members had joined the Club. Play was speeding up and now 24 boards were played most evenings.  The Teams had all done well. He thanked Jane for work as Secretary, Ruth for the refreshments and Mike as Treasurer. Mike was presented with a bottle of wine and thanked for his three years as Treasurer.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS AND COMMITTEE

The Committee; Keith Spencer (Chairman), Jane Hall (Secretary), John Edwards (Treasurer), S Fordham, J and R Furlonger, R Gunn, R Hooper  was re-elected en bloc; proposed by P Dale, seconded by C Wood.

ANY OTHER BUSINESS

Iris Smith offered to help collect table money.

It was decided that instead of pre-dealt hands the Club would play in three Simultaneous Pairs events during the year; the Children in Need event and two others run by the EBU.

In future players would drawer cards for Table seating.

Clive Wood thanked Phil Dale and Ray Furlonger for running the Team of 8 and Team of 4 teams, commenting that it is not an easy task.
