Hand 1. N has 7 clubs, two outside aces and a singleton ( 5 losers). He should be looking for game if partner responds with 9 losers. 1C: P:1H: ( great second suit fit!) 2D:4C: ( 3C does not show much strength):5C ( 10pts and 3 clubs when he could have had 6pts and no clubs). With a 6-3 fit, play to drop the Q and 5C rolls in with 6 if D not led. Note two pairs in 4H made with a 4-3 fit. It works as the cards lie but is dodgy.

Hand 5. P:P: 1H ( 15pts, a singleton and 4 losers!):4C ( green on red pre-empt vigorously)P ( 8.5 losers opp poss 7 losers):P: 4D ( shows great strength and 5H min):P:4H:P:P:5C (poss);? The general rule is “ leave the 5 level to the oppos”. N has 10 pts opposite a strong hand so W is sacrificing and expects to go down doubled so don’t disappoint him! : W might consider 5H here but with 2 losing clubs it is not a good idea. 5C goes 5 off for -250 or -1100 doubled! 4H makes easily.

Hand 7. P:P:P:1S (15pts and 5 losers):P:2C ( 10pts):P:? E now has a problem. There is enough for game but his next bid must be forcing and he has good club support, but 3NT does not look good. I think I might jump to 3S and hope for at least 2cd support . W bids 4S assuming 6 trumps with E. According to the score sheet it makes 10 tricks 3 times and 9 once. On best defence it loses 2 spades, 1 diamond and I club unless declarer can find the JC. 5C cannot make.

Hand 8. Game tricks made 3 times but bid only once. 1NT:2D ( showing spades and another):P:2S ( only 4 hcp and N could be weak):P:3S (invitational): P:P:P. In teams don’t stretch too much for a weak game nv. N/S have only 18 hcp between them but there is a void and a singleton. An alternative bidding is for S to think that her hand is very strong if the N second suit is clubs. So she bids 2Nt to ask for the second suit and when it is diamonds, subside into 3S. N however is very strong and might then punt 4S. It looks to have made twice but looks to me to be -1. Even stranger is the -180 which suggests that somebody made 10 tricks in NT. Very odd
