The clubhouse was packed on Sunday, 15 May, 2016, when 72 local, county, national and international players came together to celebrate the outstanding contribution made by Roy Edwards to the game of bridge. Winners of this Teams of Four competition were Lawrence & Jenny Gaunt and David & Marilyn Jones; runners-up were Jason Hackett & Margaret Wort and Darren Evetts & Brian Senior. The Consolation Final was won by Norman Jones & Trevor Freeman and Roger & Elaine Turner.

Ron Stevenson reminded players that Roy had started to play bridge when in his forties, and scaled the ranks at an amazingly high speed to reach Grand Master when he was 55. As well as being successful in local, regional and national competitions, he used his knowledge and skills to promote bridge and encourage players at all levels. He continued to direct, organise events and play until the last few days of his life. He died in October, 2015 after a long battle with cancer. A donation from this day will be made to Compton Hospice who cared for him in his final days.

As a great player and a bluff, but beguiling, character, Roy had a presence at the bridge table that is hard to replicate.  His friend, colleague and partner David Jones led the telling of anecdotes by players which showed how very much Roy is fondly remembered and missed.

Ron thanked James Vickers, Director and Alma Richards for a splendid lunch and all those who had helped to make it so successful.

This was the largest event that the club had organised. The time and effort contributed by members; Fred Barnes, Jim Barrow, Linda Curtis, Paul Cutler, Pat Embrey, Anna Lis, Ian Marshall, Chris Penny, Alma Richards, Roma Smith, Ron Stevenson, Terry Tonks and James Vickers  are greatly appreciated.

The Great British Bridge Scandal
The Great British Bridge Scandal

The play is based on a true story and is set in 1965 in the World Bridge Championship in Buenos Aires and the american team believe they have cracked a code. Could it be true that two british players are guilty of cheating?

You can listen to the programme on BBC iplayer or using the link http://bbc.in/1mPV5fb . The programme is available until 29 May 2016.
