“ I made it!! ”
Hard but made memories to die for.
Special new 'tent/pain sharing' friends made for
life. Tent 65's first reunion already planned! An eclectic mix but so much the
better for that.
After the first day I was 585 out of 860. I was
keeping my powder dry until half way through the long day.
I eventually finished 460 overall, 10th in
the 60-70 veteran category and in good shape physically and with no significant
blisters.
Record temperature one day 54centigrade!!! Said
to be the hottest hot MdS ever!!. However, late one afternoon we had thunder,
lightning, and wind gusts that flattened some tents and with the rest of us
hanging on to poles and ropes. The hail stones arrived followed by 1hour of
heavy rain!!
Personal housekeeping and Admin became
impossible. Two hours latter all dry, blue sky and burning sun!
After the end of the race we were faced with a
6+hour coach drive through what looked like a quarry!
My first bath, shower or even half decent wash
for 9 days was heaven, but the water had to be changed twice before I felt I
was completely clean!!
I have just rounded off the trip with a few days
skiing in Saas Fee; life returns to normal on Monday.
Our charity fund raising is now moving towards
£20k. May I take this opportunity to thank all my friends who have donated so
generously. The site www.martyn-mds.co.uk will
remain open for a couple of weeks; so anybody who still wishes to make a
donation to Mercy Ships and Facing Africa may still do so! There are also
useful links to the MdS site, providing lots of information about the 27th M
d S, that might be of interest.
The combined times were Duncan 39hrs
07 min 28 sec and Martyn 46hrs 43 mins 51secs; giving a combined time of85hrs
51min 15secs. The winner of the Jeroboam of Champagne was Martin Rock with a
combined time of 88hrs.
Many many thanks for all your encouragement and
support; fortunately I have always had a rule that I never do anything twice!!
