Mary Moore, Grand Master |
Mary passed away on July 6th 2013, just a couple of days before her 73rd birthday.
Mary played at nearly all our Western Area events and regularly represented the Area in the Spickett Bowl Competition. She was very well known and respected as a bridge player throughout Wales. She was immensely proud of becoming a Grand Master, following her team's outstanding performance in the Webber in April this year.
Mary was also a seasoned International player, representing Wales several times in the Lady Milne, in the Ladies event in the Olympiad in Istanbul and the Seniors Olympiad in Beijing.
Her contribution to Welsh Bridge was not just in playing. For the last six years she taught beginners and improvers in Cowbridge and started assisted play sessions.
In the words of her friend and bridge partner, Diana 'There is no question that Mary will be missed at tournaments, in clubs, on holidays and at her classes. Whoever said no-one is irreplacable, never met Mary.'
Our thoughts are with Mary's husband, John, and children Karen and Paul. |

Obituary - Marjorie Greenwood - 2011 |
Many members will be saddened to hear of the death of Marjorie Greenwood on July 5th at the grand age of 97.
She was the first master Point Secretary of the W.B.U. having been persuaded to take on the role by Stewart Spickett – she had worked as his secretary.
At the time she was married to her first husband and was known as Marjorie Kirk.
After his death she married Frank Greenwood and they played together in Newport in the seventies and eighties.
In later years she was a regular player at Swansea Bridge Club during the summer months.
This was because she was a great walker and belonged to both the Gower Society and the Ramblers and lived in her caravan at Llangennith for seven months of the year.
She was very fit and healthy until the last few years and members of Swansea Bridge Club and the Gower Society will remember attending her 90th birthday celebrations.

Great finale to WWBA Season |
The John Isaac competition held at the Pavilion, Withybush, was a really successful end to the 2008/09 season. It was a bit chilly to start, but things soon warmed up, helped by a good lunch. It was lovely to see John and Betty Isaac, who popped in for the AGM. There was good bridge, and with eighteen and a half tables in two sections competition was stiff. This year, Haverfordwest Club sponsored a new "emerging players' " section and the less experienced players at these six and a half tables seemed to enjoy their day. Hopefully, all will have had a confidence boost for their game and been encouraged to play away from their clubs. Its been a great year for ATO Jennifer Wardell and Chris Morley. Many thanks to both of you. And of course, thanks also to all those who have supported Area Events during the 2008/09 season and have helped make the calendar a success. We look forward to seeing you, and your fellow Club members at Events next season. The winners, above, of the Novice Event were Jan Vanringelenstein and Sumith Warnasuriya from Haverfordwest BC Below, winners of the John Isaac Trophy 2009. Graham Simmons and Godfrey Lewis of Mumbles BC. Mildred - Sid Gibbins Salver - 2008 |
It was certainly a special "senior moment" when Mildred Trigg- Knight and Ken Jenkins won the Sid Gibbins Salver at the Porthcawl Bridge Club. Mildred, who had just celebrated her 93rd birthday, was delighted. “I didn’t think we’d done so well” she said, “but we did seem to get in a lot”. Mildred, an early member of the Porthcawl Bridge Club – playing in the Sportsman’s Hall before the Club moved to Awel y Mor- has been playing bridge for over 70 years. She plays every evening during the week and on Sundays at the Golf Club. She keeps her interest in many things, especially wildlife habitat, and butterflies. “But”, says Mildred, “It’s the bridge that keeps the brain alive and fit”....... Congratulations Mildred and Ken. |

Obituary - Ann Dolan - 2009 |
Members throughout the Western Area will be saddened to hear that Ann Dolan died recently after a long and brave fight against cancer. She was a regular player in the Bridgend, Porthcawl and Port Talbot area and inspired all who met her by her determination to return to club sessions after her initial illness and treatment. For many years she did an excellent job as the Treasurer of the WWBA and all of us will remember her hard work and friendship. Our thoughts are with her husband Terry who has said how much Ann appreciated the support and encouragement she was given at her local clubs over the last few years. He has thanked everyone who has sent cards and offered their condolences. |
