3. Chairman's Report
Tim Anderson presented his final report as chairman having served in that role for 2 years. He noted that despite Bridge being in somewhat of a decline nationally, at West Bridgford our numbers are strong and we regularly have 9 or more tables. This year we have several new members and also have enjoyed visits of guests with a variety of experience levels all of whom have been warmly welcomed.
We have had some success at the table. The A Team, who were promoted to the first division of the county teams of 8 last year, finished a respectable 4th this year and will remain in the first division. Also, this year several members have played for he county, especially Ian Dovey and Shirley Ashtari who played for the County First Team against Derbyshire in April. Ian And Shirley also won the Notts County Mixed Pairs in January.
Tim noted the links between our club and the county association are strengthening. The county association plays an important role in managing the teams of 8 and teams of 4 events, running other bridge events, dealing with appeals and queries about the game, and representing the county to the EBU.
Tim thanked the members of the committee (Shiona, Ian, David, Clive and Val) for all their contributions. In addition, Ian Dovey spends considerable time preparing the boards for each club evening and entering the scores afterwards. Shiona arranges our teams of 8 matches across three divisions and along with the other team captains (David Cadwallader and Sheila Soper) spends a considerable amount of time organising the fixtures and teams. Finally, thanks to all those people who act as club night directors, especially John Barker who is stepping down from the rota after overseeing many excellent evenings. We are always looking for more help with directing and the club will give help and support to new directors, as well as helping to fund an EBU training course. Contact any committee member for details.
The last year in the committee has been mostly uneventful but Tim noted that we could be better at finding partners for people and also we could run more more competitions as we have a number of fine cups available as trophies. These topics will be addressed in forthcoming committee meetings.
This year we lost a much liked and valued member Pat Scott who died last summer. She was playing bridge with us until near the end of her life and will be warmly remembered by many club members.
