WEDNESDAY MORNING COFFEE, CAKE AND BRIDGE
WHAT SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED.

Each week players select hands chosen from the previous evening's club session  which have caused problems or which they would like to discuss. This is the perfect opportunity for bridge players wanting to improve their duplicate game. You can come to some or all of the sessions - all are welcome - no registration - but it would be helpful if you could let Caroline know if you intend to come because we don't wish to be short of cake.

Sessions will take place each Wednesday from 10.30 a.m. until noon  and will usually take place at Orchard Cottage, Castle Lane, Worth, Wells. BA5 1NL

WE WILL RESUME THESE SESSIONS IN THE AUTUMN

Welcome to the  Wells Bridge Club web site. We hope that you find it both interesting and informative.

The club plays duplicate bridge once a week on Tuesdays. We are affiliated to the English Bridge Union (EBU) via the Somerset CBA. Bridgemates are used for scoring and hands are computer dealt (duplimated), enabling hand printouts and display on the website. The Club also takes part in SCBA, EBU and BGB events and, of course, master points are awarded for all events. We cater for all standards and cater for those who have learnt how to play bridge and want to practise their newly acquired skills. Some of our players regularly do well in county competitions and occasionally at national level. Others just enjoy a pleasant evening's bridge. Recently we have twice been the Somerset inter club champions - this event involves competition at three different levels and involves players across the range of experiences- and we have also twice represented Somerset in the regional round of the Garden Cities' Trophy.

As an affiliated club all our members are entitled to the benefits of EBU membership which you can read about here.

The club meets in the Seager Hall, Union Street in Wells and there is ample free parking.

Membership costs £5 and table money is £1.50 for members and £2 for visitors. Refreshments are included.

Play starts at 7.00, and players should arrive by 6.55 at the latest.

Visitors and prospective new members are always welcome.
GARDEN CITIES
For the third time in four years Wells, having won the Somerset qualifying event, went forward to represent the county against the champion clubs of seven other counties in our region. Having finished bottom of the heap in our two previous trips to Bristol the team did rather better this time finishing in sixth place against some strong opposition. The team played pretty well but were well beaten by the eventual winners from Worcestershire. All the other matches were quite close affairs decided by a single board here or there. It was a very enjoyable afternoon. The club was represented by Sheena, Anne S, Anne McB, Andy, Mike, Barbara, Wendy and Tony.
BRIDGEMATES ARE HERE

by Roy Rowe

Last night saw the introductionof the Bridgemate table scoring system at the club, and Andy Ridgers and EricCummings are to be congratulated on the smooth way they were implemented. Itappeared very easy to set the monitors up at the beginning of the session –everything concerning the movement being controlled by the scoring program.

After a couple of introductoryrounds everyone at the tables I played seemed to have adapted very well to thisimproved method of scoring – even the non-techie anoraks were getting into theswing of things . This heralds the end of those fiddly bits of paper with thoseinnumerable columns for scoring – what were they called – I remember thetraveller.

Several features I particularlyliked – as a North sitter by preference and being responsible for the score, itsolved one of my more embarrassing problems. I have a terrible memory for names– no longer will I have to ask someone who I have known for years to put theirnames in – just type your number! Can you all remember your number from lastnight? It will be the same every night of course.  Also no longer do I have to make a complete mess of thetraveller – wrong line, wrong contract, wrong score (yes, I have done themall). Of course it does mean that the scorers no longer have to spend a happyhour deciphering my handwriting – I am sure they will really miss that!

It is also very reassuring tohave your opponent’s names pop up at the start of new round, and because theBridgemate tells the players where to move at the end of the round – hopefullywe can dispense with movement cards as well.

One minor criticism I guess isthat the screens are monochrome – would be nice if the suit symbols werecoloured  - but obviously the costof colour monitors was a consideration in the design of the system.  In the ideal world a larger screenwould make for better display but we would also need larger tables!!

It is impossible to enter animpossible contract (like 6H + 2 – I tried), and the fact that East really has tocheck the score (and approve it) means it is far less likely for a hand to beincorrectly scored.

One feature which may please you(or otherwise) is that after a few rounds you see the overall ranking  of your partnership – if you are doingwell maybe you can choose to play safe, if not – well row the boat out anyway.

Finally of course the results were available for all to seewithin seconds of the last hand being played – no longer staying up until thescorer has submitted the results to the web for me; I did check last night andthe results were still on the web about an hour earlier than normal.

The City Cup
We have received the following request from David Wing and have invited him to the club on May 22nd when we shall compete for The City Cup

Allow me to introduce myself - David Wing - a fanatical bridge player, now 65 years old, and intent on doing something crazy before the "Grim Reaper" gets me. I plan to visit all 64 cities in England Scotland and Wales to host a FUN bridge night at one of the city's leading EBU affiliated bridge clubs.   The winners on each of these special evenings will receive the CITY CUP which will be presented by me and a photo taken - this will be a normal duplicate evening which will require no special organisation by your club. A replica cup  will be sent to the Club  shortly after engraved with the Winners names plus the name of the City represented - this is a gift from me which can be competed for annually if you so wish. Eventually I hope  the EBU magazine will publish a whole page of photos of all 64 winners. My personal challenge is to include in my travels over 1000 miles of cycling.  Charity sponsorship of this Bike Challenge is not the central motivation for this project but should anyone feel like putting a few extra pennies in with the table money that night I would ask that you forward it to any of the Club's preferred Charities or otherwise forward to the Alzheimers Society via the Websitewww.justgiving.com/citycup In May I am hoping to complete the SW England leg of my trip. Ideally my schedule is as follows:-Thurs.10 May - ExeterMon.  14 May - PlymouthWed.  16 May - TruroThurs.17 May - BathFri.     18 May - BristolTues.  22 May - WellsThurs.24 May - Gloucester These I believe are normal Bridge nights at your club and all I request is that I may introduce myself and present the winners that night with your "City Cup". I absolutely do not ask you to make any special arrangements - although a Club Notice may help attendance on the night. This project is my way, at 65 years of age, of "giving back" something to this wonderful game we all love. My focus is to highlight the huge benefits of playing Bridge and to support the Alzeimers Society. To date I have received nothing but great support from the Bridge Clubs I've contacted. The EBU are also very enthusiastic and I have received amazing support particularly from Sally Bugden Barry Capal and Matt Betts. My only personal fear is that I end up with a Photo Gallery in the EBU Magazine of 63 clubs in 63 Cities with just one missing. I will be extremely grateful if you are able to accommodate my event at your Club to represent your City.

COUNTY LEAGUE
Wells has two teams in the county league this season which started on October 14th. Unfortunately both teams got off to losing starts. The A team ( Tony, Andy, Sheena and Wendy) lost by 5-15 and the B team (Tish, Simon, Mike and Gillian) by 2-18.

The second round of matches saw both teams go down again. The A team (Anne, Barbara, Wendy & Sheena) lost 6-14 and the B team 2-18.

In the third match of the season the A team (Andy, Barbara, Anne and Tony) had a cracking 20-0 win against Yeovil. Unfortunately the B team (Tish, Diana, Diana and Tony) lost 3-17 having held a good lead at half time.

In Round 4 the A team (Anne, Barbara, Ray & Mike) lost a close match by 8-12 but the B team (Mike, Gillian and Diana x2) managed a 10-10 draw.

In Round 5 the B team (Tish, Simon, Di and Diana) beat Cheddar 13-7. The A team's game was postponed. This match was played on February 15th and Langport beat
Wells 17-3.

Round 6 was due to take place on January 27th but all matches were postponed as the hall was double booked and we had to give way to the young farmers! These fixtures will now be played on May 18th.

Round 7 on March 2nd saw the A team (Tony, Andy, Mike and Ray) beat Winscombe 13-7 and the B team (Tish, Simon, Mike and Gillian) draw 10-10 with Bridgwater.

Round 8 was not good! The A team of Wendy, Sheena, Ray and Mike lost 0-20. The B team had a bye.

Better news in Round 9 with the B team of Tish, Di Stafford, Mike and Gillian wining against a team from Taunton by 20-0. The A team match was postponed until Wednesday but was then won 20-0 by Andy, Tony, Sheena and Wendy moving the team into a safe mid table position with one round of matches to play on May 18th.

In the final round both teams were successful. The A team of Barbara, Anne S, Ray and Mike won 11-9 and the B team of Tony P, Di Sturt, Mike and Gillian won 16-4. Both teams finished the season in 6th position.

Seating Arrangements and Preferred Movements
The committee recently discussed the matter of movements and seating. We had already been directed by the AGM to introduce random seating, so that we didn't end up with the same pairs playing each other all the time. We discussed amount of time spent sitting out when there was a half table, and whether to have one winner movements all the time. We also considered the disruption and upset that might be a consequence of our choices.

We decided that minimising sit out time and ensuring variety in opponents were our two main goals. To implement this, we will do the following three things.

1. We will always play a Howell when there is a half table; further, it will always be a two board round Howell where possible.
2.  When pairs arrive for the evening, they will take a card when entering the room. This card will decide their starting position for the night.
3. With no half table, we will play a Mitchell. We will only use an arrow switch when we require a single winner.

Where a pair need a sitting position, just let the director know.

Message Board
This new message board is intended as a medium for members to ask questions or respond to questions about bridge issues such as, say, Hand 24 last night. How should it be bid? How would you play or defend the hand? Anyone can pose a question and anyone may respond but be aware that anyone (in the whole wide world) can read your contributions.
