Learning Bridge ?
Starting out

On learning bridge.

We regularly played cards as family fun including 101up which is a game in the Whist family so I knew all about trumps and tricks. The only contact with Bridge was reading Rixi Markus in the Guardian. After taking ‘A’ levels I decided that I would play Bridge at university and learned from library books during the summer holiday.

While we don’t have any beginner’s class at the moment we would be pleased to hear from anyone in the area trying to learn. If you are trying to learn from a book my recommendation is Ron Kilnger’s ‘Basic Bridge’. If you are the right age the Warrington U3A have classes which are well run. Otherwise the nearest I know are at Bolton Bridge Club and at the Deva Bridge Club details on their repective web sites. You could learn by beginning with an intensive course in which case consider 'Begin Bridge' or HF holidays.

The new Halton U3A have an excellent Bridge group (he says modestly) which can accommodate any level of experience. Contact details on the Halton U3A website.

First steps

When you have learned the moves you will not be ready for the intensity and pace of duplicate bridge. Indeed you might just want a social game with friends. Less demanding places to play to get you started are listed below:

High Legh Village Hall [Monday nights] they play partnership Rubber Bridge for 1p/100. About 7 tables.
I copied this from their website:
High Legh Bridge Club meets every Monday evening in the village hall from 7:00 until 10:00. The members are very friendly and welcoming and single players are welcome although it is obviously better if you have your own partner. If not, then the chairwoman will do her best to arrange a partner for you. The club does not provide tuition although we can advise you where tuition can be found. The club has members of mixed experience so as long as you can play, why not come down and give it a try or just see what goes on. Contact Audrey Greaves, Chairwoman 0161 904 0120.

Lymm Village Hall [Thursday nights] Partnership Rubber at 1p/100. About 5 tables.

Knowsley Village Hall [Thursday nights] they play Chicago you can go on your own and they cut for partners after every round. Once a month they play duplicate instead. About 4 tables.

Warrington U3A Friday mornings.
