Making Play Fun for All

Speak Softly, Play Friendly & Be Nice !

Bridge is an extremely enjoyable game, and courteous behavior is an exceptionally important part of that enjoyment.  And the future of Bridge depends in no small way upon its ability to attract new and returning players. With this in mind, our club closely adhere's to the ACBL's "Zero Tolerance" policy regarding inappropriate behaviors at the table. And this policy includes our request to avoid excessive noise .

We believe that virtually all players naturally follow a suitable code of conduct, and attempt to modulate their voices. But there are times when concentration and pressure can take their toll, and volume levels can rise. For these situation, we issue this reminder:

  • Speak softly, both during play and when waiting for a change of rounds.  Voices carry at the club, and excessive volume at your table robs enjoyment from others.
  • Greet others in a friendly manner prior to start of play, and be a good "host" or "guest" at the table.
  • Fill in your convention card completely and make it readily available.
  • Give credit when opponents make a good bid or play. Odds are you will eventually get one in reply!
  • Refrain from gloating when scoring a good result or benefitting from a fortunate fall of the cards.
  • Except in student games, avoid advising or "teaching" opponents or partners, unless asked.
  • Silence your cell phone. Use its silent mode or, better yet, turn it off when play begins.
  • Confine any time-consuming discussion of hands until all hands for the round have been completed.
  • Remember that Bridge is a timed event.  Chronic slow play is rude, and using more than your share of allotted minutes often puts unfair pressure on opponents.  Directors have full discretion for assigning penalties for repeated slow play.

If a player at the table behaves in an unacceptable manner, call the director immediately. Annoying behavior, embarrassing remarks, or other conduct which interferes with the enjoyment of the game will not be tolerated.
