Hand of the Week

I am looking at how easy this may be. This caught my attention though so enjoy

Hand 23 - 31st January 2018

This hand had varying results. Not suprisingly, who stops first.

There is something to be said about bidding 5 spades by North as then South does not agonise over a double or a raise.

5 Spades make for 650 and some made 6 if the opposition start with the Ace of Diamonds.

5 Hearts doubled only make 500
6 Hearts doubled makes 800

The 1 club followed by Easts 2 clubs is a bid declaring 2 five card red suits, So West will get quite excited. North has already decided that both suits will be bid.

The play is quite simple for North as Ace followed by King in Clubs works.

For West they must lose a Doamond, a club and a spade

Hand 13 (lucky for some) !0-Jan-2018

Now this is not the recommended bidding and neither is drifting off and playing in NT.

6 Diamonds is much easier and so is 6NT

This contract is making but does require some thought.
A likely lead is J diamonds won by the ace.

Now I can count 8 top tricks. If the diamonds break then I have 2 more.
I really need to get the hearts right else all is lost.

Lets try a lead to the King of Hearts  and then a finess fto the 9. The awful truth is revealed.
OK so I play the King of Spades and unblock.

Have I got a count of the opposition hands. West has 5 hearts, possible 3 diamons ( maybe 2) so 3 spades and 2 clubs or vica versa. The opposition might give me a clue by petering but dont rely on it.

I found this counter intuative. But if I play the hearts out and leave west with one then maybe they will have to lead a club for me.

So lead to the King of spades and play all your hearts you are now in North hand, You can only win the Ace of spades now (I wish I had kept the Ace of diamonds)

Then play out the diamonds and to yor great relief this works. They have to lead the club

Hand 5 20-Sep-17

No one found this slam. Neither did I.

This seems quite straight forward with a bit needs a bit of bravery

The response of 2c gives you time to go slowly. If north now does a losing trick count, 5 losers, its definately game.  With the 2H interferance It is better to jump with a 2 suited fit, so 4c.

South must now support the diamonds, by bidding 4 it leaves room to manover. If you bid 5 diamonds then the auction is likely to stop.

But does North see the potential for slam. Once you bid 4NT you are commited so with 3 aces you might as well bid 6 after all you have a singleton heart.

September 15 hand 23

This has very different results depending on bidding style

If East bids 2 spades directly then South will probably lead a diamond giving you 3 tricks you can not make otherwise.

East may well think they have a good chance to take 1NT off  and pass.

What happens now is decided by South who may attempt a transfer to diamonds bidding 2nt this will stop West bidding.
However if South passes then West will bid a diamond and you no longer get the lead but East will feel compelled to bid the spades.

How did you fare?

9-Aug hand 9

You know you have to bid this. But how to make it on a spade lead.

The rule of 7 dows not help here. You only have 1 spade trick but it looks like only 3 to lose.

There are 6 top tricks and 2 finesses available. If they both work you have 8 tricks.
So there are 2 chances making the 9 of hearts, or making the 4th diamond.

Well I am in the west hand with the spade Ace so lets try the heart finesse. That works im allowed a smile.smiley

Ok now I can try the diamond finesse and amazingly that works. Lets think frown.

I can try the hearts to establish the 9. Risky as the King of diamonds is still out, I can only afford to lose 1 before the spades are taken.

Play the Ace of diamonds and the King drops an extra reward since I now make 12 tricks from nowhere. yes

2nd August Hand 10

This slam proved hard to bid

The bidding depends on style. In this istance we were playing splinter bids and using the losing trick count,

South has a 6 loser
North a 7 loser on the face of it not quite a slam.

After the splinter by North agreeing hearts and either a singleton or void, South then cue bid his second ace and North then cued the clubs..

There are still problems and it relies on getting the spades right the a sigh of relief smiley

However East West can make a sacrifice of 7 Diamonds rhich is a good score for them if everyone bid the slam. They did not
