Stratification
Stratification - what is it all about?

The EBU provides an option for clubs to issue 'Stratified' Master Points. This allows for players of all ranks to compete in a single section but for points to be awarded to leading pairs in different categories (based on Master Point ranks), as if they had been competing in a section by themselves.

Clubs can divide their players into up to four categories, based on Master Point Ranks, of the club's own choosing.  Having reviewed the partnerships and rankings within our Club, we have now opted for three categories for a six month trial:

A. All players, irrespective of rank.

B. Players below a threshold rank. See Note 1.

C. Players below a threshold rank. See Note 1.

After each session, an overall results list is produced, and Master Points awarded to the top third of the field as normal (although at a very slightly lower scale).

An additional list is produced of those in Category B alone, and Master Points issued to the top third. It follows therefore that there must be at least three pairs with comparable scores for an award to be given.

Thus pairs ranked below the threshold compete in their own category, as well as in the overall section. However, points are not cumulative within a session - if they do well, they will get the Master Points due from whichever category gives them the highest award. They will not receive the sum of the points from both categories.

If your partner is ranked at the threshold or above, you can only obtain Category A(or B) awards, even though you have not yet achieved the threshold rank.

Note 1.  The threshold levels are kept under review and were last changed in August 2018.  On all days the threshold rank for 'B' is *Tournament Master, for 'C' is  County Master.
