Doubling
Notes taken from Brian Adlam

Take Out

Shows opening values, slightly less with more shape.   Shortage in suit opened.   Support (3+) for other suits.
If the suit opened is a major, it will normally promise 4 in other major.   If opening bid is a minor will promise at least 4 in one major.

Double can also show a very strong hand, too good for a simple overcall.
16+ points and a good suit or 18/19 balanced (too good for a 1NT overall which shows 15-17)

Responding to Take Out Double

If next hand passes then partner must bid even with no points.
Only pass with very strong holding in suit bid and expect to beat the contract.

0-8  Bid best suit at lowest possible level.   Prefer to bid a major if two same length suits.
9-12 Jump in best suit.
13+  Jump to game or bid openers suit asking partner to choose.
These values can be reduced with extra shape.
A Q 7 2
A 9 7 5
K 10 9
6 4          After partner doubles 1♣ bid 2♣ asking partner to pick a major and then bid game.

1NT shows 7-10 and stop in suit opened.
If you are weak and your only 4 card suit has been bid, it may be necessary to bid a 3 card suit.   Do not pass.

Doubler's Rebid

If partner makes a minimum bid remember they may have no points or possibly a 3 acrd suit.   Only bid if you are strong.

Openers Partner after Double

With support be aggressive with raises,   Bid to level of the fit.
K 7 6 2
5 4
9 7 5 3 2
J 6          After 1♠ double - 2♠ to make it difficult for next hand

Negative Doubles

When partner opens 1 of a suit and next hand bids a suit up 3♠ the a double is for take out, not penalties.   It will show 4 cards in the unbid major.
With 5 cards prefer to bid the suit.   Shows responding values - 6+ points.
