Opening Bid (Weak 2): Points 6-10 with 2 honours

Major suit

  • Weak – not if other major is 4 in length and fairly strong

  • 3rd position – take a few liberties

  • better if non-vulnerable

  • Rule 15: no. of cards in suit + points in hand = 15+ then open

Competing

Raise partner to 3 (I've got 3 of that suit – opener does not bid again

Raise partner to 4 (4 card support)

2NT = 15+ points

New suit (at least 6 card suit, Majors over Minors)

3NT = Long suit Minor, stop in overs

Opener's response to 2NT

3C = 6-8 poor suit

3D = 6-8 good suit

3H = 9-10 poor suit

3S = 9-10 good suit

3NT = AKQxxx of opener's suit

DEFENDING

Double – opening bid but shortage cover in other suits

New suit – 2 diamonds, then 2 hearts or 2 spades (at least 9-10 points) – 5 cards but stronger

NT – 15-18 points, decent stopper in opposition suit

Responding to a double

2H, X, PASS (X = opening bid level)

  • Pass it (X) if strong and good hearts

  • 0-8 minimum level bid

  • 9-12 jump

  • 13+ bid game

4th Position

2H, Pass, Pass; borrow a King (3 points)

  • Stretch to double

  • Try not to pass

2NT = 15-18 points

3C = Stayman

3D = Transfer to hearts

3H = Transfer to spades (5 spades = enough for game)

3S = ?
