MONSTER 30 POINT HAND MONDAY

WE WISH TO THANK OUR LEARNED READER GUY COUTANCHE WHOSE PASSION FOR THE GAME  HE SHARES WITH ALL.

How many times have you held a 30-HCP hand? West players on Monday Oct 16 were treated to one:

Bd: 20

Vul: All

Dlr: West

              ♠ J2

              ♥ Q753

              ♦ Q75

              ♣ 8432

♠ AKQ104                      ♠ 8

♥ AK84                        ♥ J1092

♦ AK                          ♦ J8

♣ AK                          ♣ QJ10976

              ♠ 97653

              ♥ 6

              ♦ 1096432

              ♣ 5

E-W have 13 top tricks(14 when the ♠J falls), but there's a glitch: the clubs are blocked. No problem in a club slam, where ♣AK can be unblocked and a spade ruffed to draw the remaining trumps for 13 tricks. But most played the hand in no-trump, four Wests gambling on 6NT with their huge hand. Thanks to the fortunate heart holding, clubs can be unblocked and dummy can be reached in hearts with careful play. There's a trap to avoid, though. On a heart lead from North, it's OK to play the ♥J--but if it holds, West has to overtake with the ♥K! Then ♣AK, ♥A, low heart. North wins the ♥Q, but the ♥10 is an entry for the clubs. If West lets the ♥J hold on the heart lead, there's no way to reach the clubs later. As long as South keeps all five spades, 6NT is down one.

Six hearts might be reached on an auction like this:

West     East

2C       2D

2S       3C¹

3H       4H

4NT      5D(1430: 0-3 key cards)

5S²      5NT³

6H

¹ Artificial, weak hand

² Asks for ♥Q

³ No ♥Q: with ♥Q, East bids 6H and West can try 7H.

or

West     East

2C       2D

2S       3C¹

3H       4H

4NT      5C(0314: 0-3 key cards)

5D²      5H³

6H

¹ Artificial, weak hand

²   Asks for ♥Q

³ No ♥Q: with ♥Q, East bids 6H, and West can try 7H.

Six hearts should be made by playing ♥AK early, then ♣AK, heart. North wins only the ♥Q.

An excellent question is how to reach the cold grand slam in clubs. Old-fashioned bidding could do it, like this:

West     East

2C       2D

4NT¹     6C²

7C

¹ 28-30 HCP balanced(standard meaning)

² East sees 28+5=33 HCP at least, and should show the excellent 6+ club suit with this jump.

³ West can count at least 13 tricks, and knows the club blockage won't be a problem in 7C, but could be fatal in 7NT.

Good old standard bidding is not obsolete!
