An introduction
An introduction

This popular bridge club was founded in 1980 by four friends who played bridge socially and then decided to form a formal club.

The club now has a membership of over one hundred enthusiastic players who enjoy the challenge and reward of the game.

We meet on Friday afternoons, 1.20 p.m. for duplicate pairs and Tuesday evenings at 7.10 p.m. for duplicate pairs and Teams.

Visitors are most welcome, but no standby partners are available.

We do have a limit of 16 tables so a phone call to the Chairwoman, Lueen Francis, on 07754080425 would be advisable.

Courteous behaviour

Please help to keep Thakeham a welcoming and friendly Club. It will help if you do :-

  • Greet others in a friendly manner prior to start of play on each round.
  • Make your convention card readily available to your opponents and fill it out completely.
  • Give credit for good bid or play.
  • Contribute positively to the good management of your club.
  • Not criticise partner or opponents at the table or in public.
  • Not gloat over good results.
  • Not object to a call for the tournament director.
  • Not argue about a director’s ruling during the session.
  • Keep noise to an absolute minimum while play while boards are still in play.
  • If a player at the table behaves in an unacceptable manner, call the director immediately. Annoying behavior, embarrassing remarks, or any other conduct which might interfere with the enjoyment of the game is prohibited specifically by Law 74A. Law 91A gives the director the authority to assess disciplinary penalties.

Please also see Constitution and Etiquette from the left hand menu.

Following our Chairwoman's announcement last week, an electronic recording device called "Bridgemate" will be introduced at Thakeham Bridge Club shortly.

It is very simple to use and will provide the following benefits to our club -

  • It will provide fast and accurate results of a Bridge session, usually immediately all boards have been played.
  • It will provide, on every table, the present and next pair numbers, their names and the boards to be played.
  • It will provide sit out, switch and skip information.
  • It will reduce director calls to sort out incorrect or illegible traveller information - paper travellers are not required.
  • It will remove the necessity for score cards - although they may still be used for reference if required.

A structured introduction is being finalised, to ensure a smooth and simple transition to modern bridge data recording, and should be completed early in the new year.
