Tips When Defending
Taking All Your Tricks In A Suit

What does West lead? Then how does East play the Spades to make sure you win all the tricks you can?

  1. West leads the K.
Top of a Sequence in a long suit is a standard lead in No Trumps

  2. East must play the A!
    1. East knows the lead is top of a sequence so West must have Q and J.
    2. East can see three s in the North hand. Partner must have four to have led spades and East has three themselves. There are only thirteen in the pack so South must have three s ( thirteen minus ten ).
    3. If Step 2 seems cumbersome remember that players that take time to work out where the cards are will beat those that rely on guesswork every time.
    4. Now East can overtake partners King with their Ace and return a small and East-West win all their tricks.
    5. Note:
      • If East doesnt work out where the cards are and mistakenly lets West's King win the first trick West will continue with the Queen. If East lets that win too then East will win the third  but have none to return to partner and two winning  tricks may go to waste.
